Is a race or is it a car show? I understand racing where you have a start and finish and a checkered flag. I can't grasp this drifting thing. Style points? In a race? Anybody participate in this? I've tried to watch it a few times but I can never tell who's winning!
its a fad made popular by a movie called fast and the furious: tokyo drift. at least when that movie came out all of the sudden every high school kid was into it.
This goes back to the old days...back in the 'Wild West', when men were men and women were scarce...you could kinda 'drift' around here and there, maybe looking for work, or women, or for a town to shoot up and burn down whilst you kill maybe a dozen other guys who maybe were also 'drifting'...if you could do all of the 'drifting' activities I describe above, then you might be called a 'High Plains Drifter.' Since then, the term has been abused and misused by mods, rockers, and finally hip-hop types.
Say what you want about Wikipedia, but when it comes to getting info that isn't old enough for "valid" sources of information: drift competition.
Ok, from the reponses and from the Wiki I conclude that Venom51 is 100% correct. Hence I'm never gonna understand it.
It was very popular in Japan when I was stationed there in the early 90's. It's entertaining. I wouldn't go out of my way to attend a competition though. A friend of mine turned me on to Initial D on YouTube which is pretty cool if you're into anime.
