Yamaha TZ250F in Rob North Low Boy Frame (Possibly Carruthers/Roberts frame) Market Overview: TZ250Fs are highly collectible as mid-level GP bikes, and Rob North Low Boy frames are sought-after due to their link to legendary racers and engineering quality. Frame Consideration: If proven to be Carruthers/Roberts frame (e.g., KK001 or KK002), value increases significantly. Without documentation, it’s harder to command top-tier pricing, but knowledgeable buyers may still value the bike highly based on frame characteristics. Complete TZ250F w/ Low Boy Frame (without documentation): $12,000 – $16,000 Mechanical spares: $1,000 – $2,000 (depending on parts and condition) Likely resale value (without proof of frame origin): $12,000 – $16,000 Potential value (if documented provenance): $20,000+ Asking $5,000
I bought the TZ250 at the end of the 1979 season. At that point the Yamaha factory was not yet producing a Low Boy Frame for the TZ250. The previous owner (a AAMRR/WERA expert in CT, hoping to move up to AMA racing) had bought the frame without engine, and put an F series engine in it. After agreeing to buy it, we had to delay picking it up, because it was being stripped down so local frame builder could take detailed measurements. I raced it in 1980, and part of 1981. It has ben sitting ever since. When I started racing again in the 1990s, I raced the TA in vintage races, and the EX500 in modern races I have a picture, but it is 3.9 Meg, and the forum says it is too big to upload. On my old computer I could compress photos, but I have't figured it out on this one. If you message me an email address, I will send it to you. Or if I figure out how to compress it I will post it here. I am in Northern Virginia
Man, trust me this is killing me……..I love old Yamahas like this, but have too little knowledge in getting it going and keeping it running. The 2 rd350’s I “had”, I wanted to build into mimicking these as best I could…….just no real funds back then. Now that life has changed mostly for the better, Ive been stupidly dumping money between my 2 main FZRs to get them up to speed, reliability-wise after sitting a couple years too long. I’ve got 3 r6’s, a yzf750, now a fzr1000, and several dirtbikes to look after……..just can’t do this. Spur of the moment I’d sell everything but my yz125x and get this TZ………but I’d have seller’s remorse shortly thereafter. I don’t know how somebody is not snatching this up yet!! It’s f**king awesome!!!!
Britx, the tzs have a wealth of information and parts are avaliable. Enough of them were made that there are still quite a few still in use. Some in the US and others in Europe. When I bought my 1989, I was actually looking for a late 70s bike because they were pivotal. Of course there were other important years also. Since you have two stroke experience and rd experience you could easily do this. You could just sell a bike or two of your stable to pay for this after the tz purchase. Also if I remember correctly these are easy to convert to tz350s! This bike seems like it just needs freshening. You could probably do it all or most of it yourself. A TRUE vintage gp bike. A RACER MUST buy this. Don't let it become an ornament!
