Just watched the final episode of Breaking Bad last night. Mr Current Affairs over here. Took me 3 years to watch the series lol. I cannot believe that I was able to watch it this far after the fact and not have it spoiled in anyway. What a show! I just started the Sopranos... Not kidding
Loved Sopranos when it first aired, 98-99? It was on prime or Netflix etc about a year or so ago…….. Lots of beautiful t&a scenes, but the storyline was hard to get drawn back into. Better call Saul >Breaking Bad
Like you I watched the Sopranos after Breaking bad. I surprisingly stuck through the entire show. It was probably good in the 90’s when it came out, but compared to Breaking Bad, for me, it was a major disappointment. I’m probably jaded, because I think Breaking Bad is the best series I’ve ever watched, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have a good friend who is an attorney and he agrees with you. I always assumed he was jaded/ in love with Saul, because he is an attorney. Clearly no one else would think Saul is better? But hey you’re the second person I’ve interacted with that believes this. There maybe others, I just haven’t met them.
I got back into about 18 months ago when Talking Sopranos was an active podcast with Imperioli & Schirrpa. I remembered it being movie quality when I started watching in the 90s... it looked dark and 8mm like this most recent time of rewatch. Then my wife found a box of all the seasons on DVD in our clutter. I can maybe watch a scene or an episode where it had some action but I cant binge it. The opening credits remind me of being a child passenger through the toll booths, on the Pike & going into the City. The "famed" short cut many North Jersey folks had to the Tunnel along the Hudson is now jam packed with retail and high rise buildings. Traffic backs up so bad on the GWB, daily, Waze or Google routes folks down that river road and it is a parking lot.
I've watched BB, Soprano's and Saul multiple times. They all have some slow sections but I think BB had the fewest. Oz started it all but I've only watched the entire series once. It was a bit too realistic. The one acclaimed series that I didn't make it through was The Wire. I watched the first 6 episodes and it didn't seem to be going anywhere. I should probably try again but I have a hard time binging during hockey/football season.
Oz is probably the one show that could hold any sort of candle to Breaking Bad. As for the realism, my cousin always said that it was spot on. He bid 3 years in his 20s, then basically did all of his 30s. He died on his 43rd birthday.
You should watch it just for Marlo & Omar battle... a couple of cool cat criminals with a suprising amount of resource. Method man, Lance Reddick, & Wendell Pierce also give a great performance. The character & story weaving is awesome.
Sopranos was good, then meh and finished ok. Better Call Saul> Breaking Bad, but part of that is because it answers a lot of questions, but also Rhea Seehorn is much more likeable than BB wife
You quit right before things started happening. The first couple of seasons each start very slowly. One of the few things I can think of that starts this slowly and gets to something that makes it all worth it is Severance. Good lord, that was excruciating for around seven episodes.
For me, it’s the character. No matter how hard he tries to do good……..shit always goes wrong. I empathize Funny enough, I typically hate cop/lawyer shows.
