I think that cummins gasser will be a game changer if they can mate it to the right transmission. I fuckin hate my diesels and they're stupid expensive to operate. The ones from 1985 were more reliable. Much more. Their only bonus is in the stupid heavy category or in the mountain hills 4% sustained grade for miles category. Caterpillar pulled out of the semi truck engine game completely......... when the EPA put a gun to their head, they walked. That's been probably 12 ish years now. Government doesn't make your life easier now. They make it worse.
IMO opinion the niche diesel for a "regular guy" is an 06-07 LBZ duramax/allison...They fixed many of the earlier duramax issues and its pre DPF, etc..only EGR I think and easy delete. You get good parts support, allison 5 or 6 speed (year dependent)...but they can be priced like 7.3 trucks...
With 8spds and 10spds being pretty ubiquitous now, I find it hard they'd hamstring a good engine with a bad gearbox.
You give Cummins WAY too much credit. There are a bunch of them in the hotshot and RV transport world. Diesels just need something like an Air Dog and regular dosings of fuel treatment, to have longevity in the working world. As a daily driver? No chance.
Yep, we don't even have to have mufflers on turbodiesels. Our state sucks, but at least we have this going, ha. My 6.0 is fully deleted and straight piped. I was worried about my exhaust, but 2 different inspection stations confirmed it....no muffler required. I drive like a grandpa so I don't bother anyone, but my truck is a bit loud at full song ..... Off topic/. Been to NOLA track lately?
Had one and couldn't agree more. I got rid of it at exactly 36000 miles as the warranty ended and it was constantly in the shop.
Same. May weekend after mothers day is the next day there will be a trackday at NOLA, nearly 6mos after the last one. Damn shame. I try to hit every weekend they have, if anything to offer support in hopes that the trackdays stick around. I love the track, it's my home track, but man the management of that place has been horrible from jump. I'm convinced it's an intentional loss/money laundering thing for the Chouest family lol. I've been contemplating getting a minimoto or something to get some more track time at the kart track, but it seems even that is very sporadically used/organized for events.
It seems (like most vehicles) these have 5-6 issues that affect like 50-75% of the trucks out there. Almost always emissions related failures like EGR cooler, DEF component failure, lift pump failure. Did you have a myriad of issues or were yours all the 'common' ones?
Yeah ever since Laney Chouest moved out of state, it started going down. I was more curious as to the actual track conditions, if it had gotten unrideable from bumps yet. The minimoto stuff is disappointing too. I did the GAMRA stuff on the kart track twice I think, and then *poof* no more minimoto days.
All the typical issues plus a shitload of electrical gremlins. Door locks that wouldn't work, radio would freeze, windows quit working and so on. I really loved the size of the truck and the power but overall it was a POS. I have heard others argue that theirs was great but that just wasn't my experience. THe last straw for me was they had to replace the whole exhaust system becuase it was so coked up the truck kept throwing codes. Cost them $4000.00 Under warranty, that was the last straw for me. I went and bought a 2019 Ram 1500 and am at 90,000+ and its only ever been in the shop for a electronic gremlin that wouldn't let the truck shift into 4wd. Totally covered under warranty. I am glad I made the switch.
They've skimmed the surface a couple of times, there's definitely bumps, but it's a good track. It's no Barber, but it ain't No Problem Raceway either.
I assume you were too smart to try the 3.0 ecodiesel in the Ram, right? Bummer to hear it was such a pile for you. I'll admit I'm interested cause they're sooooo stinking cheap, and I can fix mechanical things myself saving big cost. The one I saw this past weekend was asking $8500 because it 'needed' a turbo. Which I would've been fine with, even if it truly needed a new turbo, $10-11k and I'm into a running driving pickup that can pull trailers easy peasy. But I had to make an offer under the presumption that it needs an engine because I couldn't be sure it didn't wihtout really digging into it - which i wasn't gonna do in his field.
