Went to look at this truck that ‘needed a turbo’ but the dealer refused to work on cause it was deleted. I pull up and see a WERA and TDW sticker on it from the previous owner. Can anyone give me any backstory to this thing? Found it in Robertsdale, AL.

Cant tell you whos truck it was, But man was those things a piece of shit. We had one for a while. No good on fuel, hated starting if it was cold out. They had a nice interior though

I'm preety sure it says on the title who's truck it was.

What was deleted, the turbo, or an ad post?

I didn't look at the title while I was there. I was looking for the original/previous owner. The DPF,SCR was deleted. The EGR cooler was removed (during diagnosing by the dealer I'm told) but was definitely still on the truck the last time it was running.

Why would you do all that? It has to still run after removing all that stuff but how well?

They run better without all that crap

Deletes are very popular. They run better and are more reliable. For an old diesel truck the choices are either delete the emissions or scrap the truck. I dont think that many people pay to fix the emissions stuff.

Replacing the emissions related items (which are very prone to failure) is prohibitively expensive for pretty much any truck not under warranty. In this case I think the EGR cooler failed and filled the cylinders with water. It turned over, but I didn't continue trying to start it because there was water in the crankcase. I basically offered him scrap value for the truck but he declined. It may or may not need an engine now, it's hard to tell without a definitive backstory or my actually tearing it apart (which I'm not going to do in some guy's field prior to my buying it).

It’s ashame that truck turned out the way it did. The concept I thought would have really caught on with a HD diesel motor and light duty chassis

I agree. I was a huge letdown of a truck. Cummins shit the bed on that motor

They sure did which from Cummins is shocking.

I saw Cummins is releasing a big displacement gasser engine now

I typically like eclectic shit, so I dig it. I'm also a bit of a diesel enthusiast, and a DIYer, so the horror stories don't really scare me. All the modern diesel stuff kinda has the same failure modes anyway. The real problem with the Nissan is utter lack of parts/support.

With how expensive and complex diesel engines have become, a big gas engine is the CLEAR choice if you're buying something to work at the lowest possible cost. But dudes have money and are willing to spend it on cool shit, so they'll pay $10k more than 7.3l gas v8 to have the 6.7 diesel.

Not that gas engines are without their faults, but a big cube simple port injected v8 like the Ford 7.3 makes a lotta sense in today's market. And it'll be simple/cheap to repair by comparison in 10 years.

Ahh Nissan as a pick up overall doesn’t match up to its competitors…. It’s hard to argue that the “premium” trim of the Nissan was even in the same ball park as the top trim levels of Ford, Ram, GM etc.. The Nissan has a super cheap feel and look to it IMO

I agree with the gas engine thing. Unless you need the power of the diesel to tow it doesn’t make sense from a gas mileage and maintenance cost with modern diesels.

It’s not like the new diesels lasted even close to what their older counterparts did. How many modern diesels do you see with 500k of mileage plus on them and if they do make it there was some type of significant maintenance/repair/replacement to get there.

I'm not sure they were ever seen as 'premium' compared to the domestic brands, especially after the more modern Chevy, Ram and Fords came out not long after. But on the used market they sure are cheap by comparison to the others lol. Got a cheap ass like me interested.

So how does the emissions delete work in states that do emissions tests? For gas vehicles here in GA, they just check for CEL status and stored codes.

Is it the same for diesels? If so, do owners have to trick the ecu to not throw a code and the the cel?

    It doesnt work there.

No emissions here in IA for example. There used to be a whole industry around the deletes that has been greatly reduced lately post dieselgate. I think a lot of shops doing this stuff got fined.

They check to see if the components are there. I don't believe the do the sniffer test.

In Louisiana we also don't have real emissions testing. Just annual inspections for checking lights, turn signals, brakes, windshields free of cracks across line of sight etc.
