You are thinking exactly right. We've come a long way since the thirties. Back then everybody abandoned the central US because of past bad practices and no knowledge about how to recover from those bad practices. Today, we know better and all it takes is leadership that makes the right decisions as to how to turn the economy around using what we have in large abundance. Manpower.

Over the past few decades we've seen many rules and laws passed that do not favor businesses because some of those laws place very restrictive limits on how businesses can operate. These are rules that have to do with excessive taxation and forcing businesses to take on more and more "benefits" for employees than those businesses can afford. We really have no choice. Some of these laws must be eliminated before small businesses can start making a profit and still use domestically supplied labor.

Compare Detroit and Pittsburgh...both cities are (or were) approximately the same size. Pittsburgh was devastated by the collapse of the steel industry in the US in the 60's and 70's. On top of that, Pitt was a very "union town" as anyone who was in the USW could testify.

Now, Pittsburgh has reinvented itself. It is 100 times cleaner, not exactly a booming city but not on the ropes either. Detroit should be able to copy the example, but a few things are standing in its way.
    1. Crime is a KILLER, not only of people but of dreams too. As long as crime is tolerated there can be no progress. (hire Rudy, pay him a small fortune, and let him do to Detroit what he did for NYC).
    2. Stop looking to the auto industry, they gave up on you a long time ago.
    3. Find out what your strengths are and exploit them...hint...you sit on the world's largest fresh water shipping choke point in the world...ship building? Transportation? There has to be something (or several somethings).
    4. Stop whinging and get to work...we're sick and tired of hearing it. Keep it up or we'll pay Canada to take you off our hands.:D

Section 8 housing is BIG in this area. They're building more section 8 stuff, and converting many condos and apartments to section 8.

It's the new gig for property owners that can't sell their junk shit.

Silly to move for a 12/hr job when you can stay here for free.

Thanks. They said as long as the exercise stress test that is scheduled in the morning goes good then they want to fly me to Denver on Friday for training and New Zealand on Sunday.

The stress test shouldn't be a problem and the lady hiring me said she wasn't worried about it either. So I have my fingers crossed.

At the South Pole right now it's -48 with a -91 wind chill.

Where I'm getting set to go it's 36 with a wind chill of 31 and sun rising over the mountains.

Of course it's about to turn winter there. Summer is almost over. :D

so, where or who are the so called "vigilantes" in this very sad picture?

Maybe Detroit can bring Ray Nagin up from New Orleans and have the Detroit PD go house to house and disarm the registered gun owners again in order to combat crime like he did after Katrina...

If I was that woman I'd just have me + my neighbors soak the facing wall/roof of my house for a good day or so, then have the local hoodlums set the place on fire. Everyone wins - asshole Congressman gets burned, lady doesn't have a fire risk next door anymore, and the hoodlums get to have some fun that doesn't involve robbery.

You know the one. The fallin' down, peelin' back, pile o'dump that looked like it was reverting back to nature?

Wonder how much tax was NOT paid during those transfers. Congers is a bigger blight than his house yet the fools keep sending him back to save them.
