I'm considering purchasing a '91 3YL1 model and I was wondering what people run for the rear. The front would be a KR151 120/70R17 since Dunlop does not sell a 120/60 anymore. But the rear is where my question comes from. Yamaha recommends a 165/55, which Dunlop offers as the KR451. I'm wondering if anybody has run a 180/65 Sportmax or 180/60 KR451. I've heard of people only strictly 165/55s, and I've also heard people have had issues with chains rubbing and tyres not seating properly with 180s. So anything that you have I'd greatly appreciate.

I'm just asking to get a general idea.

Check your tz rim width. Then check the recommended width for various 180 tires. Regardless of clearance issues, I would be surprised if the stock tz rim is wide enough.

The chain on my 1989 tz250 just clears the 165.

I think that bike came with a 5.25" rear wheel. The 180 is rated for a 5-5.5" wheel, so it could go on there. I would worry you would have a hard time getting that tire to maintain heat as you ride. I would expect you to have some clearance issues with the swingarm also. The 165 has a 629mm diameter. The 180 has a 663mm diameter.

The 165s were designed for those bikes. We just sold our last two Dunlop 165s. A new 165 is being developed now. No ETA on its release. We still have plenty of Bridgestones in stock to keep you rolling until we get the new tire. .

Alright, thank you for that info. I've heard some say that 180s will handle like shit, so that makes me lean more towards the 165 now that I've heard that and the fact that it won't heat very well. Thank again
