We have an older small wheel non electric start. Seriously clapped out engine that was done when we bought the bike for 50 bucks just a few years ago. Managed to nurse it along through a few hare scrambles etc. Found a low hours electric start engine, that should be here in a week. Will the electric start run on non-ES electrics, using the kick-starter? Assuming capping off the vrr connection for time being. Plan is to replace the harness + electrics & airbox/battery box etc to full ES system, later as we go if it’ll run on KS for a short while.

Yes. It will bolt right in and work fine. Like you mentioned, the harness will need replaced to use the starter. Most electric start MiniGP builds have the starter removed anyway. Totally non necessary on a TTR125. A five year old could kick start one.

On the flip side, thumbing the starter as you pick the bike up from an oopsie so it's running before you even swing a leg over is awesome...

Main thing was just to replace the engine……..but this is what she hare scrambles, so not if, but when she stalls on a muddy uphill in the woods, the button will be nice

Engine is in and running damn nice! Soooo glad I did the Niche carb swap already!! All the remaining electric start components arriving tomorrow, including battery box. Now I’m wondering if I’m going to need to swap the airbox out to an ES model……..different part numbers between the non ES and ES, not an ultimate deciding factor……..just not sure exactly how the battery box fastens or fits with the non-es. Hare scramble in a month……so our time’s ticking
