I don't think we're ever going back to large displacement stuff due to emissions regulations and such, but a larger n/a engine will almost always be more reliable due to just being less complicated. I'm assuming you're talking about a 1/2 ton truck here OP, so you're down to a leftover Nissan with the 5.6, GM or Ford with the 5.0 V8. Otherwise everything else is turbocharged. If you go 3/4 ton everyone has an option and they're considerably cheaper than the turbodiesel options.
The Tacoma is also having transmission issues, suspension issues (shock top mounts breaking), and overall QC issues (body panel alignment, for example).
