Top speed on the street?

Discussion in 'General' started by arlingtonrider, Sep 28, 2003.

  1. What is the fastest you have gone on the street do you think?

I confess on 9/11/01 I maxed out my street GSXR1000...saw 175 when I let off the gas. I was kind of in a rush and did not intend on going that fast, just sort of happened. I ended up coming up on traffic, braking, of course things come way too fast at that speed and going onto a paved shoulder at (indicated) 99mph. Did not crash, it just was absurdly fast as cars going 65 are basically at a stand still.

Just curious as a local rider is serving a 30 day sentence for going 95 in a 55. Prior convictions, but I imagine I would just now be getting out of jail for that speed that I hit; regardless of my driving record.

Northern Virginia is not the place to test top speeds.

Two of my buddies had their girlfriends spend a weekend in jail for occasions involving 100mph + tickets. (One of them got busted doing 135mph on the Toll Rd (Rt. 267) in her Mercedes SLK. I think she drove home that night because she was hot.)

Anywho, I did an indicated 140mph on my CBR1000F a few weeks after I first got it. (Which was probably 125mph or so.) It was on my first trip to Tennessee, on I-40. Haven't gone that fast since. On a racetrack either....I ran a GPS on my FZR400 one weekend at Summit and saw 119.8 mph.

I used to max my zx6r all the time until I got busted for doing 140 in a 55, as you can imagine the police officer wasnt to happy with my top speed "testing". The cop was nice enough to write me a ticket that was for less than what he had caught me for.
When I first came to the U.S (I am a British Citizen) I recieved 14 points in the space of 5 months and two 6 months bans. It was after the second ban that I decided to tryout the racetrack as an alternative means of getting my "speed fix",,,
Anyway,, I sold the zx6r and bought a GSXR750 that is used primarilly for the track,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i've forgotten what I was going to write now as it is 12:30AM and I am drunk,,,,,,sorry:beer:

an indicated 186+ on my 89 GSXR1100 that was done up a bit. it was on a straight highway with no cars on it except fot the intrepid RT that almost killed me and then tried to run me off the road and then wanna race with me.he actually thought he would win. i kept pointing to the 1100 sign on the back as he was trying to pull away from me. that is about the only time i did a top speed run and i was pretty pissed when it happened. i pulled over and tried to get him to fight but he screwed off in the car. lucky guy i guess, lol. i never ride like that now.

    (diet)DrThunder Why so serious, son?

In the early 90's a freind built a GSXR 7/11, and had the motor all done up by Yosh...had the head done, cams, big bore, flat slides, etc etc...I rode that on Rt. 116 in MA and got it up to an indicated 175 approx in what seemed like about 4 seconds.

That was the last time I did a top-speed dash on the street. The bike wasn't close to topped out though...I never did hear what it would do.

Last year on SR-13. Hadn't ridden in a year and needed a fix, so I got an R6 and opend it up to 167 indicated.

What's more fun though is trying to bleed off that 167 going into 10a at road atlanta.

I got my R1 to 181 indicated..... (it was about 750 in the red)... I had it to 178 and then I hit a downhill somewhere on I-26 to orangeburg, think it was that big one right there at exit 126......

    But honest officer!

Back in 98, I have a built 900rr. Being a part time police officer for a bit, I knew a few state troopers. The speedo showed 190, the radar showed 180:eek: I later installed a dampner:D

Way back on my 92 GSXR1100...pipe, stage 3 w/no airbox...
186 (going downhill) indicated and I could not get any more...

The bike was weaving badly in a slow rotation and my helmet was crushing my face.

I am now older and too afraid to go that fast again on the street.

indicated 186 on a very lightly tuned '01 GSXR1000, flat road, calm wind.

    Indicated 135 on a 1972 CB750 Honda (bought from Darrin's dad) in...well, 1972.

On world-famous, seldom-policed straight stretch of U.S. 15 over Bluestone Creek near Clarksville VA. For those heading west to VIR from I-85 or I-95, on the east side of the long bridge leading into Clarksville, take a right at the U.S. 58/Rt. 15 intersection, ride about three miles. The nearly two-mile stretch starts with a long downhill that passes over a long but wide stretch of bridge over Buggs Island Lake, then ends with a gradual grad increase. Coupla country roads just around the bend at end of straight stretch, so escape routes are available if perchance you did happen to meet any law enforcement (never heard that it happened, but then I'm a little out of the loop of this local generation's street squid crowd).

I usually try to find where a bike tops out at least once. There is a 2 mile straight between Manchester and Woodbury GA that starts with a good down hill and ends with a 100mph+ sweeper.
The fastest I've been thru it is 155mph indicated on a stock YZF600R.
I enjoyed it, the bike enjoyed it, and the hoopty pickup I passed probably thougth we were a UFO.

RZ Racer It passed tech LAST time!

I've hit 48 mph in a sprint and 67 going down a big hill on my Peugot. What? Oh MOTORCYCLES! I used to do a lot of stupid shit on bikes. Every bike I had, I would find out it's top speed the first day I had it. I still like to know, but am very hesitant these days to go that fast on public roads. Fastest I ever went: A friend, who was a beginer, had bought a zx11. (smart choice, NOT!) He was very intimidated by the bike and wanted me to take a spin on it to "show him what it could do". Like a fool, I hopped on the thing, rode down the block, turned around and came back at about 120 on the rear wheel. After I touched down, (over a mile later!)I went a little farther, turned around and really got on it. I was just shy of redline in 6th when I went by the second time, about 175 indicated. (obviously, no wheelie this time) I got away with it, no death, no ticket, no sweat, but looking back, I'd say it was one of the dumbest things I ever did on a bike. (not counting my accident 2 years ago)

    Squid mode on...

On my 2000 GSXR750 I saw an indicated 186mph on a large empty interstate...amazing how a slight bend can feel like a relatively sharp turn at those speeds...got that T9 feeling at Road Atlanta.

    Squid mode off...

Don't do that much anymore after an 18 wheeler changed lanes in front of me when I was going about 160-170...All I saw was a greasy Fifth wheel (just the rig, no trailer). Then he whipped it back in the slow lane....WHEW!

The bikes are ridiculously fast...and most of us are ridiculous.

Oh ya...I did drag race a new Z4 the other night...on my DRZ400 Supermoto. We pulled away easy, then he stabbed it so I had to follow. I stayed in front of him until I shut it off around 80-90mph...had to turn.
