I will be driving to St. Pete to pick up a car. I will have a one way rental for the trip down from GA. I can't seem to recall if there are any toll charges in the Bay area. Can anyone confirm? I have an Illinois toll thingie that I can assign to my rental if needed. The car I am buying will not have a tag on it for the return trip. If there are tolls, should I have the toll device in that car? I may opt to return via Ormond Beach, and I may hit tolls in the Orlando area. How are cars without a tag treated?
Florida is Toll By Plate if you don't have a transponder. If you don't have either one I'd expect to get pulled over.
Make sure you have the title(filled out, not open), bill off sale and proof of insurance in case you do get stopped.
I grew up there, but it has been a while. That said, it is (mostly) what it was. Selmon expressway and Veterans parkway. And some new one in St. Pete. See map here: https://www.sunpass.com/en/tolls/tollsSunPass.shtml. My experience using my pass in another car, is that they will read your tag and note it on your account, but if you pay "somehow" they will generally be happy. Pay by tag is much more expensive, FYI...
Did you pay for the "toll package" on the rental? I275-I75 is no toll just avoid Selmon Expressway as it is a toll road which is as easy as telling your GPS to avoid tolls
I'm trying to "do the right thing" in regard to tolls. That is my only concern. What happens if I drive through without a tag or transponder? Not having a tag, I expect to get pulled over. I will have handy: 1. FL for car with my info on the back as buyer 2. Notarized Bill of Sale 3. Proof of insurance on the car that has the car's VIN. Rentals in GA (where I live) won't have that option. But I am not worried about the rental, as I can assign my IL transponder to it as soon as I pick up the car (about eight hours before I start my trip).
Pretty sure it's gonna pick up the rental car tag # in case you do go through a toll road. Which will then come back to them. I'd ask what their policy is. Never heard of police pulling anyone over after a purchase of a vehicle. Title and Bill of sale in the vehicle on the way back to GA. I bet you won't have any issues.
Having just rented a car for spring break with the kids 2 weeks ago, I just got the tolls that National pushed to my CC. So essentially yes, if you rent a car and go through a toll by plate, they'll hit you for the charges and fees together. FWIW - I bought this 2 years ago and it works flawlessly. https://www.amazon.com/Prepaid-Portable-Automatic-Payment-Nonstop/dp/B08C3T3KYR My trailers are registered under it also. With prime you can get it before you leave, have it set up and you won't have any issues.
It’s all electronic now just drive through and if they send you a bill… you can pay it. Or not. I don’t think it matters much. If you don’t have a tag… send it.
if youre just visiting... the selling owner can obtain a temp tag prior to pickup... then just blow through all the tolls as a "thank you" gesture...lol If you stay on I4... no tolls. Otherwise there are 8 toll authorities in the central FL area. Also EZ pass started a $1/month fee for account services and set a min $25 replenishment... so the min account balance you can have is $15 before they replenish the min $25... basturds!!
Most Florida tolls that I had to go through had an option to pay cash at a toll booth. No plastic, only cash money.
I learned that last night. https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a31552949/florida-car-tax/ However, it makes it sound like the seller would then have to pay 6% sales tax. I wouldn't make him do that. BUT ... it sounds like FL's tax on selling a car is like GA ... what GA calls TAVT, or Title Ad Valorem Tax. GA is 7%, FL is 6%. If I did things by the book, and paid FL 6% tax, GA would credit that towards my 7%. I could then get a temp tag, giving me the option to not drive around w/o a tag. Handy if I wanted to hang out in FL longer, versus returning home asap. The concern would be what price does FL use to calculate the tax. I am paying about 1.5X book value. I think GA goes by the book value and not purchase price. I'm headed down early early tomorrow and will spend a night there, returning early Friday. I may still get pulled over, but not issued a citation. Looking forward to applying the "J-mod" to the transmission and getting a "Marty Tune." Spoiler The J-Mod (or Jerry's Mod) is named after the Ford Transmission Engineer, Jerry Wroblewski, who helped in the design of the AODE/4R70W transmission and came up with these modifications. The J-Mod is intended to increase shift speed and decrease wear on the clutches of the automatic transmission. "Marty Tune" is via Mo's Speed Shop in Dallas GA. He is well known for his tunes to the 4.6L modular engine. https://mosspeedshop.com/contact-us/
I live in the St. Pete Area and travel North Frequently. Simple answer. You do not need to go through any tolls to get from Georgia to St. Pete. Just take 75 to 275 and you’re good.
