Everyone here is talking about the KTM / Husky 500's, but I'm here to tell you that the 350 versions have more than enough get up and go to go like stink! After 488 miles in 18.5 hours of 85% Forest Service roads, 15% curvy GA backroads I can affirm this.
Rode north from Jake Mountain Parking to Van Zandt's Grill & Grocery for lunch and back last week, with one stop for a rear inner tube swap. Seven of the eight riders older lifetime off road riders, six with multiple dirt bikes. Oldest 75 years old, leading the ride. Five of us on 350's; one on a KTM990, one BMW on a '08 R1200GS with 47k on the ticker, younger rider on a G 310 GS. Was NOT a slow pace, as 2 are current off-road racers, and four of us are former racers.

I suggest you consider the 350's.

The difference with the 500s, you can 'scream' them at 100mph all day and they just don't care because they never see the revs the 350s do. You can go longer on maint intervals, and the crank in particular will last longer when abused with continuous road duty. The only downside to the 500 vs 350, a bit more gyro effect from the heavier crank? It's like comparing a CRF250L to a CRF250R, except in KTM's bizaro land the less stressed motor has power everywhere over it's racier sibling, without the weight penalty.

Of course I saw the light and ended up with a 24 Husky FE Heritage version on clearance for $8900 shipped. My 2T friends were disappointed... but the thump of it while stalking them on single track is amusing.

I know nothing about these KTM's...is the 350 plateable? I kind of like that option. Never mind, I did some checking and only found one that said it could be street legal. That and most of them were priced the same as the 500's that are also street legal.

For mostly tight woods stuff the 350 is probably the better choice. If your riding on more dirt roads/fire roads/ paved roads the 500 is a better option.

I paid a reduced, advertised price of $8990.00, (without taxes and fees, of course,) at my preferred family owned dealership Cam Roos is the parts manager at.

KTM's EXC-F, Husky FE 350s, Gas Gas ES 350 are all 50 state legal. For some reason maintenance is free for quite a while on CA sold units. Yes, you'll do more maintenance work, with a 1.1 qt. oil capacity and other engine maintenance.

I've said earlier, this is the perfect bike for me as someone closer to 70 than 60. I've demo'ed the 350, 500 and 690 on the street this march at Daytona. The 690 is the smoothest single cylinder I have ever ridden, but is not a 'real dirt bike.' The 500 vibrates like crazy, and has MotoGP power for a dirt bike. 350 just needed to hit my price point. I wasn't going to pay $13,600.00 for it though.

I decided to buy this bike instead of the 40th Anniversary ZX4-RR I've literally had a deposit on for almost 2 years, and am so happy I did. (Last year's '23 ZX4-RR showed up and locked up the transmission during PDI on the dealership lot.)

My 13 500 exc may be the best bike I’ve ever had. It does everything I want to do really well.

I'm saying the same thing about my '24 FE350s. They've updated almost everything on the bike for this year model, except for adding the Brembo hydraulics added to the '25.

To me there’s not a whole lot of difference between the 350 and 501 riding them. The 350 just has a little less suds. Will still run down the road at 70 well enough. With only $500 difference between them the 501 was my choice. Not sure if consider it a adv bike though. It’s still just a dirt bike with lights.

This. There's a lot of blurring the lines between ADV and dual sport in these kinds of discussion.

Once this nuclear fusion calms down a bit I def need to do that. Plan on doing the LBL200 in September for sure. We should do a KAT ride this fall maybe?

That’s a good point I guess. My T7 is my ADV bike, for dual sport fun I’m looking to let my son ride my WR250 and me get something like an EXC.

Found a really good deal on a local 2000 640R Adventure. 20K miles, it's had the main bearing replaced along with many other parts (pretty much a restoration). I wasn't looking for this bike, it just popped up and the price is under $2000, so I'm thinking about it. Watched a bunch of videos and read a few reviews, most say it's almost a legendary bike. Anything I'm missing?

"Bought this several years ago and it was a bit of a basket case but it had all the right things already done; crank bearing upgrade, foot peg upgrade piece (allows use of typical footpegs), fancy fuse block, additional radiator fan, engine cover with oil window, heated grips, Trailtech speedo thingy, etc. I tore it apart and installed new swingarm bearings, head bearings, wheel bearings, rear shock, rebuilt the water pump and carb, silicon hoses, Braking front wavy disc, rear wavy disc, Supersprox sprocket (also comes with larger Supersprox), replaced petcock, header from a SXC, replaced headlights with Hella HID pods, carbon fiber tank guards, Garmin XT cradle, and plenty more stuff I've forgotten about. Bike comes with a couple boxes of spares including center stand, very rare side case racks, and roll chart holder. Runs strong and has plenty of funs left in it."
