With respect to Carlin Dunne, more pussification of the USA. RIP USA. https://www.asphaltandrubber.com/racing/pikes-peak-international-hill-climb-ends-motorcycle-racing/
1st post on point! Snowflakes.... There's no toughness and no fight in future Americans. The existing old regime in Russia and China must be simply drunk with satisfaction.
They need to say something then about all the craziness going on in 4 wheels. Some of the stuff going up the hill are insane! I'm lost..I thought part of the allure was the danger?
Tragedy and 200+hp on that fucking road is synonymous with danger. This in itself sucks major donkey balls. You'll do no better in a cage if it comes to "that" runoff.
I thought I wanted to do this race many years ago. Then I went up the mountain at tourist speeds. My respect for those that have gone up at speed went thru the roof. No f’n way......I’d rather ride AMP, NCM, or the new Ozark track
Google says 7 deaths in the Pikes Peak Races - 1 race official, 2 car drivers, and 4 motorcycle riders.
Seems like everyone needs to be protected from themselves these days. Pretty sure everyone who signs up knows and is willing to accept the risk. I am sure most go into it thinking it won't be them but they at least know the risk.
I drove a rental car up PP in 1989, when it was still dirt. Came close to sending it down the mountain on a few of the turns. Glad I had the opportunity to experience it. I still remember being at the top, looking down, when an Air Force fighter jet flew by ... and I was looking at the top of it! Totally freaked me out at the time.
Except this isn’t the organizer’s property and I don’t think the US Gov’t wants to host events where dudes are sending themselves off cliffs, especially when they lose the revenue that PP makes on a summer day. They’re probably one serious car crash / fatality from it ending entirely. Then there are insurers and the lawyers. I don’t think the Broadmore wants their name on an event with fatalities. It’s not a good look for them and it’s actually a liability legally. See my last point above. I’m of the opinion, based on personal experience, that people who complain how soft everyone is or the world is getting would never attempt said thing, because they too are afraid. From a personal standpoint, I use to like the IOMTT and followed AFT pretty closely, but having gotten older and have had good friends pass, I’m not interested in it anymore. I was done with AFT when another kid on a 450cc singles was paralyzed by an unprotected pole at Atlanta right in front of me. Not really interested in watching 20yo kids sacrifice their lives because promoters won’t do their job.
As stated in the PR motorcycles have been suspended from racing it a few times over the years, so maybe they will relook at having bikes back in a few years? They completely paved the place in 2012 and that was my first time there. After the race it was clear that the car guys run the show and they were pissed when 2 bikes finished 3rd and 4th overall and beat so many cars. And I as worked more races I found that the mountain and weather are not kind to the pavement. What sections that were kind of smooth in 2012 were bumpy nasty patches of blacktop in later years. Since they only close the mountain for race day, there is water, snow, gravel, rocks, and spectators running in front of you to deal with. Not really a m/c race track worth racing at IMHO, and I'm not a fan of the place. And being at altitude sucks BTW
