and this sometimes gets misinterpreted, what he meant is get a fit where it takes about 2 hours, you fully kitted up on the bike pedaling, costing you $200-$300 bucks. Its alot of money but the first time i took the plunge i stepped up my game in so many ways. My guy even thought me how to "pedal" lol, as in what muscles to use. Money well spent
I dont put out near those watts but, I had fun riding north of the border, last week. put in some 8% plus grade climbs, and got my dirt bike training in via pedals. Ski
Brining back from the dead. What is a good beginning road bike to look for used? Boy is about 5’10 and looking for a road bike to do some pedaling. What would be a good size and model to keep an eye out for. Thanks
Cannondale Synapse rim brake model from a few years ago. Or a Giant Defy. Or a Specialized Roubaix before they got kinda silly with futureshock. If he wants racey geo Allez Sprint, Caad8-12, Giant TCR.
54 is a good size. Look for something rad on super sale in oct or nov if you can wait. Shimano 105 level components will be reliable. Frame materials and wheels, whatever your checkbook can afford.
Looking to most likely grab one used from the face book marketplace. I’ll check the local bike shop also see what they have used.
Anything. Frame brands don't really matter much with any name brands, they will all be fine. You could feel out on geometry, but there's not much reason to in this case. I would look for 105 components as well, and a simple visual inspection on the brakes, cables and general cleanliness of the drive train. If it looks good, it's been taken care of and won't need any work. If there are frayed ends, messy housing, missing spoke(s), ripped grip tape, etc. then haggle for a price drop to replace stuff. Used bike market is in the shitter, you'll see people asking 2021/2 prices but they'll take whatever they can get.
Where are you located? I have a Cannondale caad10 it has the Ultegra components size 54. But I'm located in the Philly area.
Don't sleep on bikesdirect.com - while they may not be household names you can get a great value for the $, especially if a road bike future is not 100%. Its easy enough to compare geometry too... Set your budget and go shop I had a carbon Fuji from them years ago and it was incredible, and thousands less than the local options.
+1. My Bikesdirect cyclocross I bought 12 years ago is still going strong as a commuter. Decent groupset and wheels, good frame/paint. Best $300 I ever spent outside a peeler bar.
I’m 5’10” and ride a 56 or 58 in dropbar and 58 in flatbar. I can’t imagine being squished onto a 54. IMO, it’s too small. BikesOnline.com is another site to look at. Most all manufacturers have sales going on, right now. Be sure and check their sites, as many ship direct-to-consumer. I’d strongly suggest a gravel bike, instead of a road bike. They’re a lot more versatile, because their frames/wheelsets can take anything from 30mm to 50mm tire widths and are as fast as a road frame. This year, Unbound winners were riding well over 30mph, on gravel, and 45+mm tires.
The motobecane brand at bikesdirect.com can get you some good deals, as well as the fuji brand. Not quite the price disparity there used to be, but it's still a good place to look.

Those links helped. That’s not the website I was looking at. Dumb question, what is the difference between gravel and road bikes?
