I must be looney... had a double TMA and took 0 post op pain meds. I did spend about 12 hours in utter agony screaming & dehydrating into a pillow when my pain management plan went to shit.
I took exactly zero after my shoulder reconstruction surgery. Fuck that shit, I hate how they make me feel. The pain is a FAR better feeling.
None. I won’t put that poison in my body no matter what. I’ve had some bad injuries and surgeries, and I won’t use any of that garbage. I hesitate to even use Advil, Tylenol, etc. Pain is weakness leaving my body.
I had shoulder reconstruction surgery. I took two painkillers that night and only Advil and/or Aleve after that. That shoulder sling with the flowing ice water helped a lot. I did everything the surgeon told me to do, it did take 2 years to heal completely and it's wonderful now. I can even throw a baseball just fine.
All of what @pjzocc and others shared. Late to the party, but after 14 surgeries over the past 14 years, I always see how the ibuprofen / acetaminophen and ice works first when I get home. Sometimes it's all I need, though I often take a narcotic at night to help me sleep, along with keeping all bedside in case I need more in the middle of the night. I've learned how important good sleep is for healing. You figure out what you need in time. One of my TKR they didn't do a nerve block and I needed to use a lot of opioids. Ice baby, ice!! On another note: If you have the option to have ANY surgery done at a surgery center, ask to schedule it at the hospital instead. My daughter is an OR RN. I didn't take her advice once and used the surgery center. That's why I didn't get the nerve block, along with other different things.
When my kid broke his femur the ER doc wanted to put him on intravenous pain meds, don't remember which one now, but when I told in no universe are you giving a 12 year old drugs he looked at me like I was crazy. We argued for a bit, but in the end tylenol is all he got.
This thread makes me think of the dudes in the civil war that lost arms and legs and only had alcohol. Fuck. Those were some bad ass dudes.
Pain is super personal. No one here knows how much pain the OP is feeling or is going to feel. IMO, take the hard pain meds before the pain gets too bad. Don't take them if the pain isn't bad. I've had 4 incidents of broken bones - 2 requiring hardware. The forearm plate was the worst and required almost a week of opiates. The collarbone plate wasn't as bad and required 2-3 days of opiates. The broken hand and the ribs needed 1-2 doses of opiates.
Not related to pain management directly but If you haven’t tried peptides for healing this is the perfect opportunity. BPC-157 would be at the top of the list. It’s a wonder drug for healing and it is amazing for gastrointestinal health. I would add TB-500 and if you really want to speed up recovery add a low dose of Growth Hormone. I have cut healing time from surgeries in half with that combo. Doctors and physical therapists noticed how fast I healed for my age. I’m 52. If you are going to do it I highly recommend injectable over oral dosage. It’s not hard to learn how to reconstitute the peptides. Seems intimidating at first but trust me if I can do it anyone can. lol
I have a wife and sister that both are going through cancer and various surgeries as a result. They find Senokot as the best laxative to assist. Its available at CVS, Walgreens, etc.
Don't forget that an opiate washed down with a beer or two will help you get to sleep and sleep through the night. Too many of either will help you sleep forever. P.S. Disclaimer... don't really mix alcohol and pain meds, the results are unpredictable and likely not the best alternative.
Yep, you need to be ahead of the pain, when taking the meds. I broke my collar bone, and learned of the magic that is hydrocodone. Not only does it eliminate pain for me, it also makes anything that might be bothering me disappear as well. (this is my own personal opinion. how drugs affect you may be different. your results may vary)
I'm going to have surgery to repair my ACL in a couple of weeks and I will avoid opiates at all costs. I'd rather be crying in pain than feeling groggy and then have to ween myself off those fucking things. Plus I like to poop and there's a fine line with stool softeners. You're either constipated or shitting your pants.
Wean off the meds at your personal rate of tolerance to even being a little uncomfortable. As far as bowel movements, this stuff works wonders and isn't phased by opioids from the post-op constipation. https://www.gnc.com/cleansing-detox...7u-CcHkOClbCEUJWA7oaAvsOEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
