I got a question, I switched from 180 sc1 to 190 sc1 slick. Im getting these weird tire folding wobbles in the rear. It only happens on a high speed turn, in 4th and 5th gear full throttle. Its like a rodeo bull It feels like tire psi is to low by the way its folding over. I ran 24psi at 80c or 176f
There are more restrictions with tire design, materials, etc., etc. with street tires because of OE requirements. And yes, there is a range of rim widths that a tire can be used on, but if their tire and wheel engineers want a 180/55 on a 5.50 wheel you won't get far trying to sell them a 180/60, and hell no not a 190/60. Racing opens things up with development, sidewall shape/angle, and carcass/tread materials. I am sure that the current 190/60 that is designed first for 5.50 wheel has a different build process, sidewall shape, and profile that are optimized for performance. Then when you look at tires for Phillip Island and Daytona those have different materials too. This isn't the old superbike 190/60 slick (6.0-6.25 wheels) from 10 years ago.
Anyone here have any experience on Mid-Ohio's new pavement? Trying to figure out how many mortgage payments I plan on giving the tire guy for the VMD weekend. lol FWIW I am on a ZX10R at expert pace... I plan to do the practice day Friday, and I have 2 races a day for Sat-Sun.
Quick question pertaining to rain tires: I've got a 5.5" rear wheel on my FZ09. It uses a 180 tire. Pirelli offers a 160 and 190 Diablo Rain Tire. Which would be better suited for this wheel? Thanks.
Tricky question as the 190 rains were replaced by a 200. The 160 rain gets a funky profile on a 5.5o rim so maybe find a 190 rain?
Maybe in slicks? But I would think the DOT SC3 is still around. You CAN get 180/55 slick in SC1&2 so that is an option. 1 800 my local tire guy is your next step
I know it’s a different bike but I can confirm that the 200 rain rear works well on an RS660 5.5” wheel that we normally use a 180 rear tire on. Maybe you could find one to mount and check?
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I assume your tire to chain clearance was no problem? And this was a 200 Pirelli rain tire? Thanks.
My Pirelli vendor (Trackside) doesn't seem to stock the 180/60 slicks any longer. Special order only. I'm going to grab a 190/60 takeoff to test fitment on my 848 (I've heard there's enough adjustment if I run 2 more links in the chain). I'm tired of running yesteryear sizing (180/55 in my case).
OK then a 190/60 is 195mm wide with a 662 diameter on a 5.5 rim vs. the 180/60 at 190mm & 656mm on the same rim. So the answer seems pretty simple, the market (& WSS) has moved away from the 180/60. So Alex & Mike (aka Trackside and/or MDM) are stocking MORE of the more popular 190/60 because of demand. It seems easy to me you need to pre-order the less popular tire or make some adjustments and use the 190/60?
I migrated from the 180/60 to the 190/60 a couple years ago. I didn't notice any difference and didn't make any setup changes. That said, I'm pretty far off podium pace so it's not saying much.
I felt a huge difference, the 180 was a lighter nimblier tire but had less grip and easier to break loose on exit. The 190 is heavier, more grippier You have to make changes, the geometry is setup for a certain tire height, when you change that height you upset the chassis. As for going from a 180 to 190 you should lower the rear shock length to atleast 5mm. If the rear shock isnt adjustable, you can raise the front of the bike by lowering the forks in the triples. But I suggest hiring a suspension tuner, to aid you at track side
I havn't made the switch yet, but I was curious your take on what a text book would say the changes "should" be. When I switched from 180/55 to 180/60 I did raise the front 5mm and lowered the rear 5mm. I cant say I personally noticed any change what so ever in any aspect of the bike. I just made changes cause the internet said so haha. If theres talk of the 180/60 going away and not being available track side I'm just preparing for what ill be buying.
