My 748 is ear splittingly loud. It has the stock headers, a 45-55mm mid pipe to adapt to the 55mm Arrow cans. You all think that's what makes it so loud or do pipes get like that when they need re packed? Is that even a thing for sport bikes? Never had that issue before so I'm not sure. My Tuono has dual Arrow pipes and sounds pretty normal (for a v twin with aftermarket exhaust). This thing is just ridiculous.
Captain Morgan is looking for a yeller duc with old man syndrome, go buy some dB-killers and slap them in there
Random question, but did you put the pipe on it? Did it just suddenly get loud or has it always been that way? wondering if the previous owner took the packing out and sealed it back up and there is no packing in it to begin with? buddies I raced with all raced ducatis and rode them on street and I wouldn’t say any of them race or street were ear splitting loud.
I'm with Zamboiv, I'd take the cans apart and see if there's any packing material in there. I've had plenty of Ducs and none of them have been obnoxiously loud.
Friend has the same setup. It was fucking obnoxious when new. He has repacked it once. Also has that fucking vented clutch cover which also is annoying. Hates it when I tell him a pack of HD's are quieter.
Just for the sake of discussion can you describe the issue better? Is it too loud in the decibel meter sense or is there a sound in addition to the exhaust sound that is adding to the cacophony; e.g., an exhaust leak, etc. Note, I'm not including the dry clutch. My 996 has a 50mm Termi half system and is not what I'd call obnoxiously loud. It sounds freakin' sweet. My previous air cooled Ducatis were louder, but not "ear splittingly so" but I did repack one set of slip ons on a 900SS because they blew out after 20K miles and got very tinny sounding. This search yielded some good if dated info on using fiberglass kits to repack existing slip ons. It looks like you could still get a Termi repack kit. Failing that Fly Racing offers one too.
Yeah it’s just loud exhaust. No engine noise. It’s got a dry clutch but that’s not anywhere near the level of loud that the exhaust is. I may try the repacking thing. It sounds like it has straight pipes on it the way it is now. Come to think of it there may be some db killers in a box somewhere with my other spares for it.
5k miles? Straight swap for a 22 year old girl? She's extremely high maintenance, but you own a Ducati so that's obviously not an issue.
I had a full 52mm Arrows exhaust on my 748SP (that grew to 853) 20 years ago. It wasn't especially loud so I figure you just need some packing.
Twin’s pulses tend to blow the packing out faster than the average bike. Repacking will probably create a mellower sound but the Arrows are probably just a bit loud by design. I’ve got Arrow hi mount slip ons for my Monster 900 and they sound sweet.
The PO of my first 848 had the stock mufflers gutted. It was insanely loud. Louder than the full Akrapovic on my other 848. Agree about taking them apart and having a look. I spent the last two days sharing a garage with a bunch of vintage bikes. Two Vincents, a Norton, a Triton, some other thing (Drixton?). Not a muffler in sight. Every single one of them was so f'ing loud.
Did the 748 come with a cat? I know my Multi I have to watch what I order if I ever put a system on because slip ons will be way louder if you later add a mid pipe to remove the cat than a full system at one time.
