@Tristan You want the most recent dual-counterbalanced version of the 690 motor. While KTM introduced that motor in 2016 (or before?), there were some running changes that the KTMs and Huskys got for the 2018 model year. These motors have been very robust. -T
Yours looks nice and has a lot of goodies on it, but in that price range I'd need to sell or trade my F900XR to make it happen. And if I'm doing that I'd prefer a new one with a warranty. I can almost get over the ugly color of the GG700 at the just over $10K price they're going for. I also asked about older 690's as I'm seeing some Dukes locally with 1-3K miles on a 2016-17 for under $5K. I can probably find that in the couch cushions...
Here’s my anecdotal input on the 690 SM. My riding buddy has a ‘21, and the thing absolutely rips when it’s running. Fortunately we have a great KTM tech locally, so he can get it fixed relatively quickly when it breaks down every other month. He’s spent $10k on repairs in the past 2 years he’s owned it. To be fair, my pal murders the bike, using every bit of performance the motor will give him. Someone with a milder wrist would probably get a bit more reliability out of it.
If you opt for a Duke 690 - the '17/'18 models are the one you wanna get. I had one and it was a fantastic street bike - incredibly light at 340lbs fully fueled, and for a large single it was very smooth and not lumpy at all (that's the biggest upgrade vs older models, plus the dash and a couple other nice tweaks). Non-adjustable suspension but for my 180lbs it was right in the ballpark and the only real pain in the ass for some owners is the typical KTM/Husq issue - the clutch slave which is an easy fix for an Oberon aftermarket one (mine was fine but forums are full of owners griping about it).
That kinda shit scares me for sure... felt the same about BMW, but so far so good on my XR. I would 100% be flogging any motard I got my hands on...
Thing is, you should be able to ride any modern bike to its limit. And certainly KTM’s what with their ready to race ethos and motto. Maybe he just got a lemon as that motor and platform are generally very reliable. My buddy doesn’t actually mind when something breaks, he has a Super Duke that he also rides, so he just jumps on it. The frustrating part is the long wait for parts, or even unavailability for certain parts. Last year a plastic water pump or oil pump gear( I don’t remember which) sheared off leaving the motor dead in the water. That part was backordered for like 8 months. The Tech did a lot of digging and was able to find one in Romania. It cost him about $200 to get a $20 part.
Pandora in Chattanoga has a NEW '23 1290 Superduke for $13,500.... https://www.pandorasmotorsports.com...nooga-TN-4230c5d7-1ae3-4606-af6b-b1e6013c1764
I swore I don't need another one of these and I don't, but my god is that tempting. That's not much more than what I sold my 2017 for with 10k miles.
Wow great deal! That's slightly less than what I got mine for earlier this year.... I wonder what the OTD price would be?
Haha. Absolutely... but, I only care about MV Dealers... and you know I already checked to see if they are one. Team Narc!
They want freight, dealer prep, and doc fee on top of that, but still a good price. thanks for posting.
I just read that KTM has 100,000 bikes that they can’t sell sitting in a warehouse. They have shuttered assembly lines for 2 months. Should be more fantastic blow out pricing on the way.
I wonder if it will be like early 80's CBX's that Honda couldn't give away for years. Then they finally donated a bunch to different mechanic programs.
