keyless cap - i want my key back

Is there some special trick to getting your key out of the lock after you remove the whole assembly from the tank? I tried using channel locks to squeeze those wing locks on the bottom to allow me to turn the key. No luck. This dumb little thing has me scratching my head. 06rr

 

Is the frame straight?

 

Push the seal part towards the cap.
Like you're squeezing a sandwich before youre about to take a bite out of it.

 

Close the assembly, you know, like it were still mounted on the tank and you wanted to take the key out?

 

Self-restraint doesn't seem to be working well for you so far…
