Clash Of The Titans - Lauda Vs Hunt Kelley is a bad ass. Definitely the kind of sibling you want to have on your side.
I couldn't agree more as I have one in my older brother. He's guided me in life so much so that I'll forever be indebted to him. A great man in every aspect.
The Fab 5 documentary about the Michigan basketball team of the early 80's... chris Webber, Rose, etc. Showed how the University & NCAA were making bank on these kids/young men... and they were getting nothing. Sort of the start of how college athletics is where it is today... because of this.
I feel like Kerry gets left out often in all this because he wasn't as directly involved in "The Legacy" as Jr and Kelly. Whether because he chose too, or was just cut out, I don't know. I haven't watched the Amazon Prime shows on Big E yet.
Agreed he seemed to be marginalized, but who knows, maybe he didn't really want it that badly? Dunno. He did have brief stints in a few good rides in both Cup (after his dad passed) and Xfinity, but mostly in trucks and ARCA. He never really had much success, unfortunately.
When the three of them are asked who is more likely to follow into Dale Sr's footsteps, Kelley points to Junior and Kerry doesn't even try to argue. I don't think he had that hunger that was consuming Dale Jr, or Kelley's business ambition.
And thinking about it more, the early 2000's were when NASCAR was booming and the drivers pretty much worked nonstop between sponsor appearances and racing. I remember they would broadcast 1-2 hours of pre race and another hour or so post race, plus side shows, and I thought, how long can this oversaturation go on? Maybe Kerry hated that part too? I know a lot of them did and they finally started to push back on a lot of it.
That might have been part of it too. But I mostly got the sense that he didn't grow up wanting to be as good as Dale to get his respect. It seemed that he had a stepdad who was there for him and who (partly) filled that void that drove Dale Jr.
Bo, Barkley, and the Big Hurt was pretty damn good. Hard to believe those Hall of Famers were all at Auburn at about the same time.
@HPPT Chasing Great - About former NZ All-Black captain, Richie McCaw. Interesting view to one of the best modern rugby players.
