F150 Spare tire question

I bet OP is wishing he just called the tire shop…

 

Is it a good idea to drive on it? No. Will it work for you in an emergency? yes. Should you invest in a spare that more closely matches your other wheels/tires? Probably, even if it is a pain to carry and expensive because you're already making the investment to come out racing and it's good insurance.

If I caught a flat on a Friday afternoon, I'd rather have the peace of mind that all will be well, instead of wondering if I should call off the whole weekend.

 

Nah, I didn't say I did and didn't imply it. A single anecdote is near meaningless.

Maybe you are misunderstanding the statistics. A mechanic that sees 5 failures with the same conditions may cry doom and gloom, thinking those conditions always causes that failure. Of course the mechanic would see the failures - it's broken. But if there were 5000 non-failures with the same conditions that the mechanic didn't see because nothing broke, then there is no doom. That'd be a tiny bit of added risk (0.1%) and that's it.

We agree there's some added risk of running a mismatched spare for extended periods. We don't know how much risk. And you didn't answer the questions, so I dont have an idea of what "extended periods" could mean.

 

I don't know, them spider gears are pretty damn small.
I actually broke a couple teeth off a spider gears,67 mustang, crow hop on hard pack dirt.
They are not meant to be constantly turning.

Its the offseason and some of us need this place for the entertainment value while at work.

 

If you get a new truck with the bigger wheels, it'll come with the correct size spare.
