What's the current consensus on the best chain tool out there? the DID and RK versions seem to be the general favorites, so that's what I'm currently looking at. But could use some advice on choosing between the two. I've seen a few threads on this but they're mostly pretty old.

I'm planning to use it with EK ThreeD GP chains 520 chains.

DID chain tool for me. I think it's a km500 or something like that.
I don't have a clue how many chains I have installed with it, had the thing for over a decade.

I only use it to press the side plate on and then set the rivet, not used to push out pins.

Bolt cutters to cut old chains off and a cordless hand grinder to grind off the rivet head to cut a "too long" new chain to proper length.

I've owned the RK chain tool for over 10y and it's been great.
The original pin broke because I didn't grease the back of it but the second pin has been fine ever since.

Whichever tool you decide on, remember one thing...when you start to flare the post, don't go straight in for the flair, instead go in a bit at a time and make several passes at it. Doing this will greatly reduce the chances of the rivet splitting when pressing for the flair

IMO, the DID design is better. Takes up less space, more support for everything, prob less likely to bend the pin. However, it does require a tiny bit more thought to use. Nbd for you after one use. But if ppl borrow your tools, you’ll probably need to show them how to use it.

I’ve had the same RK chain tool for ~25yrs. Hard to beat it.

    BrentA Very expensive.

    Motion Pro here also.
Works very well, and the quality is top notch.
My only critique would be to make it easier to hold and apply leverage when riveting. The short handle isn't super comfortable. I put a small pipe over it to help with the leverage.

I have a no-name brand off ebay/Amazon (can't remember which). I use the same process you mentioned to remove or shorten a chain.

I’ve had the RK tool for about 10 years and it finally broke about 3 weeks ago. I emailed RK with some pictures and about a week later I had a new tool in my hand free of charge thanks to their warranty. I’ve been happy with it, done easily 200 chains with it, so I’ve put it through some abuse. I have no issues recommending it.

I've also got the motion pro tool and have no complaints. That being said, I don't think I've used any other brands to compare. I'm sure there's a comparison review/video out there somewhere.

Many years ago I stupidly bought a Stockton clone of the RK. The threads galled on the 3rd use and the tool froze. Don’t buy that one.

I had definitely googled myself, but not seen any retailers that seemed trustworthy enough.
