Because when your entire selling tactic is to sensationalize everything, you end up being the boy who cried wolf. People get so used to it that unless you tell them the world is ending right now they won't even bring in the patio furniture. The flip side is if they didn't there is no end to the numb nuts that would be standing around in the destruction saying "Well the news didn't tell us it was going to be bad. It's their fault."
Jennings and immediate areas are fucked. Absolute war zone looking. Trees and everything (you name it) scattered and piled everywhere. Worse than Idalia if that's possible. My property took a tremendous hit with another 20-30 big trees downed. I'm one of the lucky ones here as my garage is totalled but minimal after that. My 2 RVs survived, lost one of 3 canopies, 2 sheds made it, the well didn't get hit and all my vehicles (pick-up, 2 hotrods, momma's car and 2 motorcycles) all survived. Freakin' miracle for sure. My neighbor's did ok but not as lucky. Thank you God!
I am sure it had nothing to do with the fact that the path shifted east so the area west of Atlanta got less of the storm than expected. That couldn't have had anything to do with it at all. If it had shifted west, you would have been hit a lot harder. Weather prediction isn't a perfect science. They warn anyone that could get hit so they can be prepared in an attempt to prevent loss of life and property. That said, yes, the mainstream media does like to over sensationalize stuff, but people did die during this storm, so it wasn't a nothing. I imagine billions in property loss and damage as well.
I really feel some people get off on it. My county FB group was buzzing with people speculating, planning to leave town, filling tubs up with water, Kroger was out of milk, etc. Complete pandamonium over nothing. The local weather "expert" guy apparently said we were gonna have 130mph gusts. In north GA. From a hurricane that made landfall 300 miles away.
I took my flags down as a precaution. Having been through plenty of them, and in come case the biggest ones, I don't get wound up about it up here. After you been through an Andrew shit would have to be really bad to be more than an inconvenience this far north.
See that's how you under sell something. They get it right about 30% of the time. But you can trust the science that the parts of the surface that aren't flooded from the polar caps melting will be on fire in less than 5 years. I'm guessing at the five year number. They've never gotten that one remotely right either. I can tell them a 100% sure fire way to predict the weather. Step outside about 5 minutes before you start reporting it. Maybe look out a window or something.
Jax has some flooding. A lot of trees down around town. We had 60+ gusts for 3 hours. Cedar Key had a 13 foot storm surge at least and several friends lost homes. Coastal FL on the Gulf side is fucked. Haven't got check-ins from family in Destin area yet.
Really? I never knew. Maybe I should have paid better attention during Katrina and Rita. Do they call you Captain by chance? People die every single day for all sorts of reasons...no one makes a big deal out of the rest of them normally...but hey...it's a hurricane with DAYS of advanced warnings, tracking information, countless ways to know what to do...maybe they were surprised it showed up. They are also listing some of the "deaths" from traffic related fatalities...
Yep...same thing over here...completely overboard. Most are just looking for attention...and feel important when in reality, they are not...typical social media. No shit...one person asked if they should leave because they lived in a trailer and had a tree in the yard.
Watching some of the coverage...I'm not even sure these clowns could get it right...they look like a comedy skit most of the time. One chick was commenting on floating propane tanks (seems a tank farm was nearby and a bunch were floated...all sizes from small to large 500 gallon ones)....she was calling them water tanks....another dude reporting on cedar key showing ground floors being completely destroyed...ummm...they are made to be sacrificed to save the structure and let water flow through and under them.
Well, there was that one snowstorm in Atlanta when the weather folks missed it developing until after everyone quit paying attention to the weather for the day. Kids stuck at school, people at work, and cars abandoned on the freeways after parked there for hours.
I'm glad everyone on here is ok. But I believe this storm is worse than what most are saying on here. The news just announced that 11 people have died, and 6 million without power. Just be thankful it didn't hit you.
I was in a work truck that day. They weren't happy I drove it back the yard via a lot of ditches and medians.
No, we know it is bad. It's just not bad in the areas where anyone with common sense would expect it to not be so bad. I'm not making light of it, but I was in south Broward County for Andrew. I been through the shit. But a lot of people that die in these things could have gotten out of the way. They often chose not to do so. All my mental midget relatives in Louisiana would be the first group to just stay put even when they are being told to get the hell out of dodge. A tornado drops out of the sky and destroys your shit in 15 seconds that not in anyway your fault but if you have a weeks' worth or warnings and you fail to do anything that's on you.
South end of Ft Myers Beach, just alil rain in the morning and a ton of wind all day yesterday. Water started coming up around 4:00 and around 7:00 I decided I should move the truck to higher ground. Ended up with about a foot of water over the highest spots. Lots of sand over Estero blvd where the cross streets are and a bit of debris but not much else. Power went out around sunset which made it a pretty morning hurricane party. I think it’s back on but we’re in Naples at my in-laws till they inspect and reactivate our elevator.
Thanks for saying where, most guys are saying here and I don't have a clue where most of them live. I was naïve enough to not realize a place this far from the coast would have flooding. My wife wants to look again in the Carolinas for a possible retirement home and we are going out next month, so this is interesting info. I remember last year when S. Cal was hit by our first hurricane in xx number of years and coincidently an earthquake hit the day before or same day. Both were nothing burgers, but it was funny all the hype the potential hurricane received. I realize this hurricane was real in Florida and throughout the SE. I saw a report where they interviewed a guy in Florida whose house was knocked off the foundation and demolished. He recently just moved back in after a previous hurricane in the past 1-2 years, destroyed it. He mentioned they have had a couple others that weren't nearly as bad as well, it surprised me he could even still get insurance.
