What is starting pay for a service writer with 18 months exp<at small independant shop> but needs to be brought up to speed on dealer computer. Shop has 3 of the big 4 lines plus Eton. Pm me if necessary. TIA
How about TREE FIFTY?????? Sound good? Damn it you Service Department Monster I am not paying you TREE FIFTY.......
I was a service consultant for 6 years. I made $7.45 and hour plus overtime and got 4.50 per labor hour I sold. The pay was great!!
nothing if youve ever done the job and understand how many workorders you could write in a day at a busy shop
That seems reasonable. Our writers do not get overtime, but the bonus program makes up for it. Experience doesn't sell, personality will make you rich. My best advice is to be good to your techs, and they will be good to you.
So if I understand this correctly, the guy that I drop my vehicle off to at the dealer gets a commission on the labor hours that it takes to repair my vehicle?
Precisely. The service writer gets a cut, the service manager gets a cut, and the technician gets a cut. The tech gets roughly %20, writers around 5%, and the service manager is around 7% of every hour sold.
I think some SC get a cut off parts as well. I did not but the overtime and volume of work we had while I was there made up for it. I made over 90k every year working 60 hours a week.
yep....it is sales. they recommend repairs for services for you car in hopes that you choose to have that work done. If you say no, noboby eats.
Ok, one more question, the tech that works on my car gets a piece of the labor rate plus . . . what else?
He gets paid the amount of hours the book says it takes to complete the repair. So, if he's good he'll get it done in less time than the book says it takes which dramatically increases his hourly rate.( if he makes $35 per hour and does a 2hr job in 1 hr he made $70 an hr) Assuming he's in a shop with lots of work.
most shops with a good volume of work coming in have the techs/mechanics on flat rate (discribed above)....a small shop probably has them on salary or hourly. if the techs can "beat the clock" then they can bill more hours than they work...completing three 5 hour jobs/serivices in a day bills out 15 labor hours for their 8 hour work day. if they take longer than the book time, like 8 hours to do a 5 hour job....then they are not very efficient. all 3 of my techs made 120k or more each year I was there. One of my techs spent 10 percent of his pay on tools (bigger box, scanners, special tools for a specific repair, his own AC machine....). He spent money to make more money. He did have to turn away as much work when he got more tools/equipment to work with. So while the other techs were sharing the or waiting on the shop tools and supplies, my tech was get more work done and bringing more work into his bays.
