I have a Harley which needs an ECU which is no longer available. There is a crashed one in Tallahassee at copart. Is it worth trying to buy the complete bike through a broker?
It should tell you in the listing if you need a broker to buy it. If you do need a broker, I can hook you up with a WERA racer who can help you out.
Pretty much. Just register. There's an approval, and I think there's a fee or a minimum you have to have on an account. There's a list of which states you need a license to buy what. Sometimes can bid on clean, but not salvage, sometimes salvage but not clean. Other times brokers/license only.
I did the Copart thing for my race bike this year. I love the bike, and it was cleaner than I thought it was going to be... Copart held about $700 in sales tax hostage for 4 months, which they shouldn't have taken. After sales absolutely sucks! They all just give you the run around. Watch the fees closely, they will charge more than the posted prices, but I did get that refunded. I had an Excel sheet out on what the total would cost at their different tiers to see where I wanted to bid, and it came out about $200 more than the info I found on their site. I also paid more than I wanted because I wanted to win... haha. Will I buy from them again? Probably.
I just saw a nice looking LX470 listed locally on Copart Looked great except for the left rear corner. Lots of brown streaks and biohazard stickers on it. Soo maybe not. What's the best way to find parts? I need a new / used hood. New ones show as about 700 for just the panel.
It is a 1998 harley ultra classic, sat for 10 years with ethanol fuel. I was going to snag the tank fuel gauge ecu and Marelli fuel injection. Sorry it took a while to respond
Copart auction fees would eat you alive. Read up exactly what you will pay on top of the winning auction bid. You will have three days to pick up the bike before they start charging you for storage. Some things sell for cheap, others not so much. I used them for a few project bikes, and it was ok overall.
Here is the bike. Since there are no bids I was going to bid $300 and see what happens. Looks like I would be into parts for about $1800 if I do not go this route. https://www.copart.com/lot/47878175/salvage-1998-harley-davidson-flhtcui-fl-tallahassee
I think there is a "buy now" option for that one for it - $575. My account is not active to see if an individual can even bid on it, or you have to go through the broker. If you are local to Tallahassee then pickup would be easy. Otherwise you will need to arrange something quick. I am somewhat local, but am traveling this week and next, and won't be much help with logistics.
I live in SC and was thinking about driving but with broker fees, diesel etc... I will probably give it a miss. Would have been nice to score all the parts from a bike which was running.
Yep, had enough or Portland and retired in SC. Actually, became an official snowbird, Maine in the summer and SC in the winter.
Freaking New Jersey they said I had to get a broker to buy a theft recovery bicycle. Between the broker and auction fees it was more than a 100% markup on what I would have bid (and won). Really what pissed me off was the bike was auctioned off in about 5 minutes with no forewarning that it was going live. I’m convinced it was an inside job, bike sold for half of what I would have paid and less than 5% of what it cost new.
Was just discussing with my buddy about taking a trip across the US for old times sake. How could we sell it? It owes us nothing, 100K miles of racing.
