My samsung galaxy has a nice touchscreen remote. Controls all the dvrs, TVs and DVD players in the house.
Same as pretty much everyone else. I have an Ipronto 6400 that I never use, and a Sony 4000 that I only use when I need to program a certain receiver. The Ipronto is handy because you can download all the needed codes from the net, so I can use it if I don't have a remote for something, but otherwise it sits in a drawer with the Sony.
yea, there's something to be said about being able to feel for the buttons. Tried a few screen type remotes, the end up taking longer cause you have to look at the remote to know what you're doing. Great concept, but not practical for everyday use.
Depends on how far you go with it. If the remote is designed to be looked at while your are using it then it makes a little more sense. The traditional infrared remotes don't translate well to touchscreen.
I have an Acoustic Research ARRX15G universal remote. It works well, but the touch screen is pretty sensitive and I tend to get inadvertent actions if not careful handling it. It can learn from existing remotes in addition to having a fairly large number of setups online to download. I've had it for several years, so not certain how up-to-date their downloads are. It also has a radio frequency mode in case you want to control something behind cabinet doors if that device has the capability. It's a lot cheaper than the Logitech remotes are, less than $100 for a 15 device remote. http://www.acoustic-research.com/universal-remotes/?sku=ARRX15G
I have the Harmony One. Best remote I've ever had. Got it for less than 200. Of course it's discontinued now. It's a combination of touch screen and hard buttons. Runs my whole theatre including the lights. http://www.cnet.com/products/logitech-harmony-one-advanced/
i have used it for the last year and don't really like it. Programming it takes like 2 days because it's so slow and the software leaves A LOT to to be desired. When it doesn't turn everything on, then it's another day to troubleshoot and re-program. It's quicker for me to get up from the couch and turn everything on. It does look nice though.
Got the Harmony "Ultimate One" and not a fan of the touch screen - oddly enough too sensitive. But as with most of the Logitech stuff I love the combo of touch and real buttons. Bird - not sure what you're running into, mine has never taken more than a few minutes for any of my remotes over the years either local software or online through their site.
When adjusting, it always seems it has to log in online and then takes some time to download , and then you have to test, and sometime re-test and keep on troubleshooting. I just want to shoot the thing instead.
I've got a harmony one as well, love it. Had it for the last 3 years and even my parents can use it fine. Only took about 2 hour to do initial setup including a few custom buttons. I've updated and added a few devices over the years and at most it's taken 20 min...
I program control systems for a living. For basic controls, Logitech aren't bad (however, I do not use them). But if you want more capabilities and better overall product, Crestron, RTI, And even URC can do a better job.
