Many companies say the produce their own movement but do not....They have it made for them by someone else, very few brands these days produce that in house
it looks like they make some of their movements but not all of them, I am surprised they make any at all
Guessing there's a prestige factor in the ones they keep in house and a margin factor on the ones they outsource. I'm not a fan of their styling (except the skeleton Large Santos-Dumont, but I don't have $30K).
FWIW, Louis Cartier was a watchmaker and jeweler. So the brand has 150+ years of history in the field. There’s not much from either Hermes or Cartier that appeals to me. I’d like to have a Tank Americaine, but it’s waaayyy down the list of things to add to the collection.
We have a stainless jumbo tank that is pretty cool. My wife wears it a lot. The new skeletonized tank looks awesome!
I figure I'd ask here since I don't know anything about watches. I have an older Rolex submariner that has been sitting in my safe for probably 10 years or more (I never wear a watch). BTW, it was cleaned and tuned up or whatever they do to it a couple years before being put away. I got it out last week and set the time but when trying to set the date nothing moves. I googled how to do it but nothing. I guess I need to take it in to be fixed but what is the best way and/or place to take a Rolex so I don't get fooked. lol Thanks!!!
Its dead....I can give you about tree fiddy for it though. Whats your paypal? In all seriousness...did you unscrew the crown until it popped out? Then you should be able to turn the crown the opposite way and that will manually wind it. And from there you should be able to pull it out one more notch and set the time. If you can unscrew it or turn it once its unscrewed yeah, its seized up...hopefully just gelled oils and not rust. Google good watchmakers in your area and look at reviews for Rolex service. If its more than 10-15 years old i would use a Rolex Dealer, as they may replace stuff that lower the value. Use a god independent watch guy. What cities are you near?
@backbone Look up a YouTube video of how to wind a set a submariner. With the history you describe it’s unlikely (although not impossible) that it’s completely dead. Are you absolutely sure of its authenticity?
Thanks yall, It seems to be working now. I read online that the first click of the crown was to set the date. That was wrong, that is to wind it like Chem said. I didn't know you could wind these, I always thought they wound themselves by wearing them. lol To set the date I just kept rotating thru the hours until the correct date came up. The watch was my Dad's and I've never really worn watches, let alone a Rolex haha. Thanks again!!!
They do self wind but when sitting forever you have to give it a boost to get it rolling. Not an issue.
Does anyone else feel weird about wearing their nicer watches to work? Like I have no issues wearing one of my Formula 1's but for some reason I just cannot bring myself to wear my speedy or sub to work.
Oddly don't wear one to the office because it's annoying to type with. Don't do really nice at the track because lord knows what I'll smack it into going out to crashes and such. Which really means any of them I consider nice never get worn
Yeah I do ... I wear my less expensive watches to work. Saves the wear and tear on the nice stuff and also people don't freak out when the "IT guy" shows up with a watch worth $9500 Even the Tudor I just got from Philip (so awesome btw!) got a lot of attention the first time I wore it.
I wear my Fortis, Racing the Truck, and riding the dirtbike and working in the shop.....I beat the crap out of it....Still works...
