If it runs good, why does it need a carb service? If it's got brittle fuel lines on it, you can probably assume the airbox rubber boots are brittle/hard as well, which is going to make that easy carb service a huge pain in the ass as far as getting them off and back on. If you get caught in the rain your back and ass are gonna get soaked. Those "aftermarket" rear shocks are junk, but hopefully they will bottom out before that "bobbed" rear fender contacts the tire. The handlebar/footpeg relationship along with the raked out front end will make for an interesting riding position and probably equally goofy handling. Frame has been hacked at the rear, because that's what you do when you're a custom builder, along with the rot inducing header wrap. As stated earlier, that model has no real classic value and never will after the, ahem, "restoration" inflicted upon it. Still, as there is no accounting for taste, somebody would fall love with it and probably pay $1,200 or more for it. We all hope that somebody isn't you. $800 tops if you really love it. And you're going to put at least another $800 into it making the thing roadworthy. Carb kits alone are $40 each nowadays and you're gonna need 4. And check the inside of that tank, if instinct is right, the expert "restorer" will have used a piss poor Kreem coating that is going to cause you problems down the road. Good luck!
If you like it...that's all that matters. Price ....ANY running bike, seems to be getting at least $1200.00 in Calif. A pretty nice 85 KZ 700 sold cheap on Iconic just a couple weeks ago.. for about that price But it was not custom it was completely original definitely a good buy, and definitely underpriced. It's the basically same damn bike as the GPZ was. Prices are going up but we like it or not what us old guys would buy for four or $500 a decade ago those days are long gone. Rz350s are going for 10 to 12,000 now I just sold an rz350 tank for $800 just the freaking gas tank.... That's stupid but that's what they're going for. It cost $100 to fill up the gas tank in any one of my vehicles.. So if you're telling a running motorcycle that puts a smile on your face isn't worth a thousand bucks? I would disagree.. Of course it will cost you money and maintenance and some repairs but what doesn't. I have been given several cars for free.... Nothing in this world is free...lol even though they're free it just means I had to repair them something goes wrong.....
For a second I thought you were still in Utah, JS Customs is the interior company that does all the work at Kindig, but you're in LA now. I'd say get it, can always sell it if you don't like it, please change the seat color
To me, that is a buck per cc bike. If you just want something to ride around on, then this would be ok, but the brakes, tires and suspension will all be lacking any semblance of performance. If you want a project then it will be an OK basis to replace the swingarm, forks, wheels, brakes, etc$$$$$$$$$, and end up with a cool custom bike that you built. There is nothing more expensive than a cheap bike project. Fortunately, you probably have the skill set and access to grinders and welders and stuff.
Figure in your time and effort. You buy it for $750, spend 400 hours working on it, maybe spend $500 in parts, then it's worth $800 when finished.
While many of the 4 stroke UJMs have a value hovering just above scrap, there are also plenty of exceptions. Check the prices of CB750s, even later DOHC F models 900/1100, CBX, Z1 and now the 1000 LTD, ELR, GS1100/1150, FZR1000, CBR900. Those are the ones off the top of my head. There is a strong following for Japanese motorcycles outside of two-strokes that is only getting stronger. I am of the demographic that grew up with only Japanese or Harley Davidson motorcycles and that demographic is starting to wane nostalgic.
Hence the “old diatribe” but yeah there’s always exceptions to the rule. My very first bike was a 78 Honda Hawk CB400 so I totally get it.
There always has to be a bike in the last spot, or the list doesn't mean anything...........that's this bike
MY 1st real bike was a 78 Honda Hawk! Old School, added a 1/4 fairing and painted it red... Terminator came out that year..lol That bike was popular! I remember finding a long straightaway by my house I wanted to see how fast it would go it barely made it past 100 mph when I got home I phoned my friends, and told them they all insisted that I was crazy and I was going to die from being so reckless funny this was 1984- the "dawn " of the super bike age and within two years we all have motorcycles that would do 130 to 150 mph. I bet you that damn bike is still running, somewhere in Calif
Motorcycles are like lovers, sometimes an older model (with a little more experience) will help get you “there”.
