RJ pulling the most RJ shit. Juju's move was pretty cheap on Hammaker. I was rooting for Hammaker at the end.
Sexton usually has had the the speed, but I'll be curious to hear him talk openly several years from now when he can be honest about how and why he gave this championship to Cooper. That being said, Cooper is one of the best at playing and winning the SX game with his given competition. He knows it's the long-game that wins usually. My hat is off to him for so many moves this year, but him going from 7th to 3rd on the last lap in the mud won him this championship, in my opinion.
Something is going on there. The backwards hat on the podium the last two rounds and in yesterday's press conference he wasn't even wearing a hat. My guess is KTM isn't paying him out on time. Maybe just win bonuses but potentially salary too.
I’ve never been a Cooper fan but that dude is just consistent. He doesn’t wreck himself and is always up in the top 5 battles. I hate how he wears his ballcap but credit to the man. He kept himself above water this year where many of the “elites” crashed themselves out. Anxious to see if Tomac will ride a Ducati next year.
Just as I had come to terms with Tomac going to TLD Ducati and having some fun, sounds like the bottom fell out of that deal. Some money backed out and they don't have enough backing now. Now the talk is red bull KTM, but questions remain about their ability to pay. Not red bull of course, they have plenty of money. But what's happening with KTM.
Eli might end up finishing his career on a Can-Am. Webb will be a non-factor for the outdoors, so Eli will be Yamaha's guy this summer. Maybe they'll figure out what a marketing success it is to have the two fastest old guys riding for them? I thought it was a genius idea going into this year. Most of us old guys are cheering them on.
I feel like Justin Cooper's about to have a great outdoor season. Will he be able to keep up with Jett? Who knows.
There is going to be a lot of turnover in the coming handful of years. Barcia, Tomac, Anderson, Stewart and Roczen are all over 30. Webb and Plessinger at 29. Then the second-tier non-factory teams have Craig, Nichols, Savatgy, Ferrandis, Hill, McElrath and Oldenburg all 30 or older. Basically over half the main event field is 29+. Lots of 250 guys are going to get a shot in the coming years.
I agree JC will be showing some speed this summer. Does he have the fitness to match the guys with a point to prove outdoors though? I think he will occasionally. Jett is likely to come out of the gate a bit slower than his best, after his serious injury and recovery. Eli and Chase will be looking for redemption and new rides. Hunter and Prado will want to prove they are relevant factory racers. I'm guessing we will see more of Mookie, AP and JC battles and holeshots that get them up towards the front also. CW will want to score some points to get a better seed for the playoffs and Kenny will be back to get himself up to speed latter this summer. Who knows what's going to happen with Anderson and Barcia this summer? Looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out over the next several months!
I agree, but, are they faster than the old guys? I doubt it. Although it won't matter if they are canned and swapped for younger riders. The teams will do what they want of course, I just don't know if it's best to do a big change. On the other hand, new 450 riders could breathe a new life into the big show, we shall see.
Honestly, no. I don't think there are that many 250 guys ready to move up right now. Over the next 5 years, possibly. But you're right in that the teams will decide. Vialle has pointed out of 250, deegan technically could do one more season, but looks like Star Yamaha is moving him for next SX season. Hammaker, Hampshire, Shimoda, well, maybe there are enough over the next couple years. New life into the series for sure.
I wonder where the age line is of racing being a "grind" vs "love what you do & it won't be work" Saw an interview with Chiz and he obviously loved it the whole 2+ decades he has been in.
I think a lot of it has to do with settling down and starting families. I absolutely love mine, but god damn have they sucked the fun out of a lot of things. I think it also makes a difference in winning races and championships and having proven yourself, if you will.
Degan said during the extended post-race interviews he's planning to win the 250 West SX series and he'd see what happens after that.
