    Sorry to hear that

If she was in Michigan smoking legal dispensary weed she would still be here with us.

A good friend, anesthesiologist and addiction medicine specialist has been very clear about the current state of things.

    1) if the drug is being purchased on the black market, it almost certainly has fentanyl in it. ALL OF THEM

    2) what we described/considered “overdoses” just a couple of years ago must now be understood as poisonings.

    3) if you have children… experimentation MUST be considered through the above lens.

The interesting part about this is how my own view is being forced to change a bit. I've said for awhile that frankly, the think that would most make me lose my shit with my son would be catching him with tobacco, primarily due to my own experience. I smoked weed, took some pills, drank, etc. And so did most of the people I knew back then and now. Most of us turned out fine and the ones who didn't truly had other issues. But tobacco affected my life for 15+ years and took close to 10 attempts to quit. then I picked it back up and had to try 3 more times to quit again. I hate the shit so bad.

But in light of the last few years and having family who work in high schools and see the affects of this shit first hand has me concerned in a way I never was before. And my kid is only 4 now. Who knows how much worse the state of things could get by the time he's actually old enough to start worrying about this shit.

I've never done drugs, because I knew I'd have an addictive personality and it wouldn't turn out good. So, I've always kind of assumed that if you wanted to get in contact with a dealer, you'd have to know another user who would point you in the right direction. Not so in Lisbon. My wife and I, very obviously American tourists, were offered cocaine no less than 5 times loudly in the middle of the one of the city squares one Saturday night. I couldn't believe the audacity, but I don't know anything about the legality/decriminalization there.

    Dude.

Almost 30 years ago walking through Washington Square Park I was offered every illicit substance known to man.

Admittedly, that was either the last days of the Dinkins administration or the very earliest days of the Giuliani administration, so NYC was not the tough on crime place it was later in Rudy’s reign, but there was no fear, no hiding in the shadows, nothing that remotely suggested the activity was illegal.

There's a Nat Geo series called Narco Wars.
They explain fairly well what's going on.
Fentanyl is much easier & cheaper to make than heroin or coke .
It's also more addictive . So addicts that are used to paying xx$$ for their fix, get laced product for less $$ .
It also makes for more replete sales , until that customer OD's .

    that’s part of it.

for me the terrifying element is, as @redtailracing suggested above, kids who are just trying various drugs (NOT addicts) are getting poisoned by fentanyl being in whatever they’re trying (where you wouldn’t expect it historically).

it’s in ecstasy, coke, laced weed, counterfeit oxy, counterfeit adderall (mail order), meth, ketamine, etc. basically any drug that people used to take at a party or just to try it out.

Of course it’s in the heroin supply, and causing overdoses. But that’s not what scares me

Not sure where you live, but they'll deliver right to your doorstep now.

    Not joking.

I figured the non dispensary stuff was all gone in the city.

There was this big yearly French music festival last weekend where the organizers typically invade some poor farmers land without authorization, and thousands of young people show up to dance to electronic music for three days straight with lots of drugs.

Local government doesn't even try to fight it. They have police presence right of the field, paramedics on the ready and some volunteer organization with a tent set up where people could go and get their drugs tested.

Lots of people treated for exhaustion, drunkenness, rolled ankles and whatever else, but nobody died. On Sunday, some of those who were conscious grabbed trash bags and cleaned up the field.

Even when I was 20, you couldn't have paid me to spend an evening there, let alone a whole weekend. I had no interest in anything that was going on there at that age. But compared to some of the things young people to themselves, I would say the whole thing was fairly harmless (unless you are the land owner, who must've been fairly annoyed regardless).

It’s interesting that fentanyl-laced shit is killing people here, and in Canada fentanyl addicts are trying to get clean fentanyl because up there it’s being cut with benzodiazepines which is killing people. Crazy shit all around. Just say no actually makes sense these days.

  12. BrentA

    BrentA Very expensive.

Yeah, it's not "laced" with it... it's contaminated with it.
Fentanyl is so potent that just a few grains is enough to cause depressed respiratory function in some people.
One location packaging fent in the same place as MDMA, ketamine, or weed, is basically guaranteed to contaminate. I say these other drugs, because they're incredibly popular. (and amazing substances.)

What I haven't seen in this thread yet concerning harm prevention, is how everyone should have Narcan (naloxone) in their homes.
It's the first response drug that can save the life of a loved one in the event of an opioid OD.

Here is some information on where you can get it for low cost or even free.
It should be free just like any life saving drug.

unfortunately all the narcan in the world wont save one Fentanyl OD. it doesnt react to the countering agent. It will however help an opiod event. Ski

    false

the extremely high potency of fentanyl does often mean that Narcan is not effective whether because it’s given too late, or because extra doses need to be given and/or are not available.

however, fentanyl is an opioid. (A compound that acts as an agonist of the body’s opioid receptors).

Narcan is a competitive opioid receptor antagonist. Which is exactly what it sounds like. That is, it functions by binding to the opioid receptors and displacing the drug of abuse, whether it’s heroin, oxy, fentanyl…

As stated above, if you have kids, Narcan and knowledge of its proper use should be in your home.

Without taking sides in the discussion, these past few posts highlight one of the big issues stemming from the long running propaganda war on 'substances'. From the over-the-top hilarity of Reefer Madness to the notion that LSD will give you random flashback trips many years after the last dose to the stories of people's brother's friend's cousin's next door neighbor's uncle who picked up a dollar bill off the floor of a Home Depot and instantaneously dropped dead of a fentanyl OD.

When there's so much bullshit out there, it casts a pall of doubt over any assertion of the dangers, risks, and potential harm involved in drug use, whether those assertions are legit or not.

The pubmed is your friend, you can find studies on everything from Ayurvedic medicine to Witchcraft . Decipher the funding and bias and you'll get an idea what's going on.
Cop and firefighters here narcan the same folks sometimes multiple times in a day. It works on on all opi-i-ayte types given the timing and dosage are reversible.

I believe that almost all personal use of "drugs" have been decriminalized in Portugal since 2001.
So, they weren't doing anything illegal.

Walking in South Beach FLA, on the strip near the former Versace mansion I was offered coke, X, and molly.
    Just walking.

Is he saying that you should assume drugs bought on the black may have fentanyl?
The statement as it’s stands is completely inaccurate.
