RS125/MD250H sprocket carrier question

    Hi,
I have a Honda MD250H which uses the same type of sprocket carrier as an RS125. I bought a Talon carrier to make sprocket changes easier but when I took the rear wheel and carrier off the bike, I see that there are two thin metal spacers between the sprocket and the wheel. Are those still necessary with the Talon carrier? Do those spacers serve any function other than to fill a gap? This bike is well-used and has been through many owners, I don't really know what is stock on it and what isn't.

I also have an NSF250r, it uses the same type of sprocket carrier but doesn't have any spacers. That one is in factory condition so I know it never had them, which makes me wonder why the MD250H would need them.

Here's what the spacers look like:

  2. I would say the spacers you removed are surrogates for the wheel collar shims seen on page 3-15. They create a small gap (.1 - .2mm) between the collar and sprocket. Pages are from the 2008 service manual.

Thank you, this is great information. Looks like the sprocket washer IS supposed to be there (the photo on 3-14 shows a washer, stuck to the sprocket) and more importantly this gives me something to measure to see if everything is lined up as it should be, per the gap measurement guidelines.

It would be really nice if I could replace all those loose parts with the sprocket carrier from Talon, to make sprocket changes easier.

Thanks so much for taking the time to find that info and take photos and post it up.

Keep that shim plate in there. I think it mostly serves to protect against wear.

I'd confirm with Stu over at RSCycles, but my understanding is that the plate isn't necessary with the Talon sprocket carrier. The Talon carrier is pretty much the same thing as the NSF250r carrier.
