Kula lodge on Maui made the best ketchup I ever had. They used to bottle and sell it for the tourists.
I had a roommate in college that put ketchup on everything. He'd go through a couple of bottles a week by himself. Meatloaf is one of my favorite comfort foods. Fried chicken is another. No ketchup on fried chicken. Oh and, catsup vs ketchup. The word ketchup is derived from the Chinese ke-tsiap, a pickled fish sauce.
it's great! a lot more flavor, more balanced, not as sickeningly sweet. basically, ketchup for adults. comes in a glass bottle too! it's fully replaced the regular stuff at my place. lights out on home-fries!
If done properly it's a loaf shaped meatball - however it's usually not done right hence covering in BBQ sauce
From some of the responses all I can say is...............KETCHUP! ON MEATLOAF? Are you insane? Ketchup goes on french fries. Maybe. My wife usually puts some really great homemade Mushroom gravy over it, or makes mashed potatoes and puts it on top of the meatloaf and bakes it some more until the potatoes are golden brown. Now, that's some good eating.
I was never a big fan of the stuff because moms meatloaf was never that good. However, I tried this recipe and it was really good. The tomato relish really does the trick and there is bacon in the recipe so that's another plus. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/dads-meatloaf-with-tomato-relish-recipe/index.html
I use half-ketchup, half BBQ sauce when i cook my meatloaf, then top with canned beef gravy and a side mashed potato volcano filled with the rest of the gravy. When I described that meal to my cardiologist he said "Why do I bother?" Then I told him I race motorcycles. That pretty much ended the conversation. He gave me a scrip for Norvasc and said "call me in six months. If you can."
BBQ sauce, I always make it Sweet Baby Ray's too. It's got a little bit of kick and tastes great on da meatloaf!
