Apparently a P-51 went into the stands. Waiting for a friend of my who is there to get back to me. I hope he wasn't in those stands. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9PPV8881&show_article=1
My friend just texted me. It hit the box seats in front of the stands. He was in box 9 and the plane hit box 42 about 100 yards away. Jeez.
They showed the footage of it about 80 times in a row on the news. Damn thing pretty much disintegrated when it hit. Bummer.
I don't want to be in the lane next to an 80 year old driving a caprice classic. No chance in hell I'd want to be standing under one flying a plane.
These are our racing brothers and sisters and they are really hurting this morning. All early indications are that the accident was caused by a mechanical malfunction.
The news showed a photo of the tail section before it lost control. Looks like pieces were coming off.
Actually he was 74 http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/18/us/reno-air-show-crash.html?hp It appears it was not age related but a mechanical failure as smoke was seen coming from the aircraft moments before it went out of control.
This bad on many different levels. Not only was their loss of life and a beautiful aircraft lost but the extremists will use this to try and get the races shut down. They try it every year with the TT. Now they will try it here.
Yes, prayers to all those involved. Unfortunately, the news media is in the entertainment business, so tragedy always gets the front page. The sanctimonious bastards will question the "need" for the activity to even exist, on safety grounds (as a public service, you know) while re-spooling the horrific footage over & over. Never mind that this is the first such incident (according to that media) to involve spectators.
