Wow, great moves for Summit Point. Glad to hear that someone is moving in the right direction for racer safety!
Actually, there would be less problem with deer on the track if people paid attention to the sign that says "no pit bikes past this point" at the beginning of the road that goes down through the woods. The pit bikes and dirt bikes spook the deer out of the woods and across the track. There is a pretty healthy population of Bambis down in those woods.
Yeah. T4 should be next! This is great news! Baby steps will get us there. Let's hope for the same improvements next off-season as well.
Just read this is the MARRC news letter ...... Wildlife at the track is a topic that was front and center in the minds of racers and the MARRC safety crew alike in 2010, after two deer strikes and several close encounters with other wildlife. The track is aware of the problem and is committed to providing a safe environment for race events. Some of the changes being made at the track, such as clearing of brush, are expected to make the infield less desirable for wildlife, thus reducing the possibility of track crossings. In addition, the track has opened up its property during hunting season as an effort to manage the population control. Questions or concerns regarding track safety should be directed to CCS or WERA race officials or Jens Scott (Summit Point track operations). Last but not least, Ms. Orsini reports the track is not satisfied with the paving repairs that were made to the track surface last year, so there will be additional work on the track surface taking place between April 20 – April 30.
I haven't raced summit yet, but it is really good to see a track being proactive and making changes for the better.
