.....that in Brazil you are fined 400 Reais (Approx $220.00) if you don't vote? Unless you have a damn good excuse. (Being out of the country isn't a good excuse.) You can't get a driver's license, register a car, etc. until the fine is paid. Should the United States enact a similar law?
It would get hung up in committee, then if it went to the floor for a vote, there would be a filibuster of epic proportions. If it were to pass and get signed into law, it would go to the Supreme Court for clarification on whether it was constitutional and the whole mess would get hung out into a vicious circle. So yeah, watching the fireworks would be fun!
I think there are enough utter dumbasses who vote now, never mind forcing it on people who don't care to vote in the first place.
Having to renew your citizenship by passing an exam every few years is an interesting thought. It'd be hilarious when members of Congress fail the “about stuff not in my state” section. Unfortunately that would discriminate against the poor as well as the stupid.
Which is better (or worse for that matter), voting and not knowing a thing about who or what you're voting for or not voting at all.
