I'm looking to buy a new laptop, been a faithful Dell costumer for 8 years, haven't had many problems with the 4 i've owned.. Doing some searching you can get a pretty nice/basic laptop for 600-700 dollars, however i've got a buddy that owns an Alienware, and will not stop hassling me about getting one, he claims theres nothing like them... But i'm unsure, i like their 1200 dollar base model (area 51), seems to be set up well and seems to have some very unique features, anyone have expeirence with these or can chime in?

EDIT: This computer will be used for work, it'll travel with me daily.. And mainly will be used to browse the interwebs, build spread sheets and documents, im not looking for a "super" computer

Never used Alienware computer, but it better have lots of features for that 1200 base. You may not need all that is has: probably better graphic card and sound card for games. I got a fairly cheap laptop from local store, toshiba satellite for about $575. Does all I need online at home, and has built in wifi for travel.

The thing i really am trying to consider is sadly i spend most of my day on my laptop, either for work or just b.s. and I also own a buisness, so either way it'll be wrote off, so that makes it a little easier to spend the extra 500 hundie :)

    3 models im looking at:

Alienware's customer support post-sale is absolute crap. Worst experience I ever had dealing with any electronics company, and I've been in the biz for almost 25 years. Don't do it.

I would go for the last model listed, Dell XPS M1530. What operating system are you looking at? Windows XP is old, and stay away from Vista Home Basic. The $1200 base for the alien is probably of XP media center, and it would probably be $1500+ for the Vista versions.

The biggest difference that the end user will notice of the Alienware vs the dellmodels is battry life, alienwares have horrible battery life. And +1 on alienwares support, or lack thereof...
Configure a dell and value wise you will be much better off. I'm a hardcore gamer and wouldnt go near alienware, and am extremely pleased with my dell laptop (i dont game on it) i bought an inspiron 1721 recently as an addition to our laptop arsenal and couldnt get anything near it pricewise when all were configured similarly.

alienware is owned by dell and they are not at the top of their game anymore.Best bet is to find a tech and pay him to build the pc you want. You will save a shitload of money.

Alienware doesn't manufacture anything, just sells rebranded stuff made by somebody else. Clevo makes most of their recent systems, as well as Sager and a few others.

Alienware used to be the cream of the crop. But they did get bought out and can no longer be considered a boutique shop.

If you want a truly custom system with individual care instead of corporate call centers I recommend.
    http://www.pugetsystems.com/ - Full custom shop, A++ support.
    or
http://www.falcon-nw.com/ - If you just want to spend ridiculous amounts of cash for a way more machine than you will ever need. Custom high end.

I got a free one here on the BBS, all I had to do was complete their program and spend a butt ton but the computer was free. I also got some wicked plastic nikes, a gucci bag and a bunch of other cool chit. And it was all freeeeeeee.

For your price range you should also consider ASUS and Acer. Check newegg.com.

Alienware is a gaming rig as previously stated, which is why it gets crappy battery life. I happen to think they are priced a bit high, those little Alien logos must really be expensive.

+10000 for Asus, posted from one of my own builds based on an asus board, p4 3.0 running at 3.6 for the last 3 years :)

Asus mobo (a8n-sli deluxe) in my current rig as well. I chose it mainly for the 8 phase power implementation. They tend to design more towards stability than tweakability but their bios is amazing. Dang, now I done gone geek again.

:) i have an older asus p4c800 e deluxe that i use to run windows home server and stream all my media from, this was one board that was designed with the sole purpose of overclocking :). But some of the stuff i build for these kids with blank checks just amazes me at overkill..
