I got a call from Rob in Jacksonville. He said things are fine, they barely got any rain. "But it's f***in' cold right now! 59°!" :D
The change in Ian's path might affect us in Loudon this weekend for the last NEMRR event of the season.

Maybe they will get smart now and run them underground like the gulf shores on the panhandle, turn a negative into a positive

Underground power lines are not good. Trust me. I've seen the research. And the reality.

Interesting, why? I haven’t seen any research. Where I live everything is underground, except the main lines running about 1/2 mile from our house and running along side a Main Street. Our place was built in 95 and in S Orange County the “newer” neighborhoods are all that way. Not sure when they went underground out here, but those areas sure look a lot nicer versus the older sections in Los Angeles or Orange Counties.

See post 20748 in the YT thread for a great explanation.

I recently had the opportunity to talk to a subcontractor to Georgia Power who was performing an inspection on underground feeders to a large transformer. He gave me an overview of how they do it, as well as how underground power cables can degrade and become safety hazards. Kinda nerdy stuff, but stuff I find very interesting.

Underground wouldn't help those with damage. You are trying to significantly oversimplify the issue.

Where I live in Sarasota county, one of the wealthiest counties in the state, I bet my neighborhood is out for 2 months. I grew up in the caymans too. Lost my home down there Christmas Eve 89 to a not Easter. This was something different.

Very appreciated. We got the tree cut off our roof yesterday. Have a company coming from destin to tarp it and spray anti mold stuff under the ceiling. And will have to look for somewhere to stay. Slept on pawn shop floor last night lol. If people want to help, send tarps, water any kind of supplies to our area. It’s bad.

That makes me a little ill. Looks like the Daytona can be saved relatively easily. The super bird is gonna need a vin transplant basically. And in comparison to the wider damage, it doesn’t matter, I know.

above line power cables tend to degrade really fast in a hurricane, compared to shorts and connections over a long term underground

Around north Fl we have a utility easement that drops the HV lines down into transformers that feed all the houses/light poles with underground service.
They just upgraded the old poles to precast towers last Oct. a lil higher & cleaner looking. They knocked the job out in a couple weeks.
Also those same transmission lines drop down into underwater raceways to feed the beach side.

I think underground cables can be ok, but it depends on the climate of the region. A relatively dry, arrid area can have them buried, and I wouldn't see any long term issues. But a tropical area that receives lots of rainfall is just asking for problems. Water tends to find its way into anything, eventually. Hell, I have above ground cables for my cable TV, and they only last 5-10 years before they need replacing due to the water that eventually finds an entrypoint, and wicks along the whole length of the cable, degrading the signal. Not exactly the same as a power cable, but still...

I agree. Also it sounds like no one looted your business and I’m very thankful for that. You have too much other stuff to deal with, to be worrying about that too.

Every type of physical medium degrades. All need maintenance and refresh at varying intervals. ND buried their lines decades ago after ice storms brought lines down and interrupted service too frequently in winter.

It all comes down to what the requirements are versus risk acceptance.
