Newfound Gap rd between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC is also going to be closed for some serious time. They haven't even given an estimate on this one. AND The Cherohala could be closed for a few months or more. - http://www.grahamstar.com/articles/2013/01/17/breaking_news/doc50f86f49a2530449359649.txt
I just got back from an adventure vacation in Mexico. I saw normal traffic routinely driving over stuff that looked worse than that in pickup trucks with beds full of kids. 'Mericans need to HTFU.
Yes, I'm sure the Mexican pickups full of kids would have no problem jumping the gap in that first pic but the EPA restricts our pickups so much that we don't have the horsepower without making the kids get out first.
What causes it? Looks like it starts right where the ditch on the inboard side of the hill starts. Do they think a drainage ditch without any kind of drainage to the low side is not going to cause issues?
a chunk of the cherohala is gone too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fWch2IyD0Y&feature=player_embedded plan to go later in the season if possible. or you will be doing up and back runs, with no loops. Ski
DAMN! I'm gonna be there mid May with the Duc guys. I love cruising the Cherahola. Beautiful scenery.
That is a lot of rain, I'm just saying everytime I hear of a slide its near a roadway but that may be the key to why you only hear about them at as well. Seems the man made portion doesnt get along with nature, thats more of what i'm questioning. Thanks Newton.
A few years ago the Pigeon River washed out the EB lanes of I-40 after the remnants of a hurricane passed through. The Smokey Mountains are a highway builder's nightmare, geologically speaking.
