Wow, its kinda sad that there is only 2 weeks left to pre-enter for the Daytona 200 and there are only 15 entries. Thank you DMG for taking US Motorcycle racing to a new level. http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2010/Jan/100128d2001.htm
"There was a time when fans counted down the days until the entry list for the Daytona 200 was officially released. Afterward they were treated with reading names of works riders from around the globe who had entered the famed race in Florida." When was that? Back in the 1980's?
90's too. But it's been awhile since Daytona had that kind of prestige IMHO. The shift to 600's may have forever broken the link to that age before DMG finished it off.
Foggy came over to race Russell in the mid 90's. Probably more after that but I have a headache and can't think.
I've only watched it live one time, but the prestige of the Daytona 200 was always something I knew about even as a kid. It truly saddens me that this institution has fallen on such hard times. Miggy's debacle at Daytona last year was an inelegant end (?) to one of the most intriguing Daytona careers. The year I watched the 200 he was slicing through the field like everyone else was riding in molasses. Here's hoping American motorcycle road-racing can right itself and repair the relationships that made it great for so many years. Economy, poor decisions, pissing contests, whatever, I just want to see things get better.
Look on the brightside, with so few entrants hopefully this means there will be alot less confusion with the timing and scoring. Not like that nightmare last year.
You really think 90 people are going to come off of $2,000 for the mandatory pit to bike communications system. I think you will see 30 at the most.
2.10 Radio Communications a. AMA Pro Racing Race Control communicates schedule, track, rider and machine status information on frequency 461.4750203.5 throughout each race event. All teams must have at least one crew member monitor this “listen only” communications channel during all practice, qualifying and races. b. Electronic audio communication and/or clearly audible signals from the crew chief to the rider is mandatory in American SuperBike. How is that $2000?
I am actually having a get together during the 200 with no intention of watching or even caring. Five years ago I packed into a crowed theater to watch. now, I just cant seem to care.
I think Foggy was the last one that I can recall. Bayliss came to race AMA an still on his climb. I think there was a Japanese rider as of late but even though he may have had a go at the Top classes I don't think would qualify as top rider.
Hell, Putter, I watched Mike Hailwood, Kenny Roberts, Gary Nixon, Yvonne Duhamel, Dick Mann, Cal Rayborn and that crowd back in the day.
