Transition from trackdays to racing

I currently only have done trackdays and would like to ease into racing. Would club racing (i.e. TPM) be a good stepping stone before throwing my hat in the WERA ring, or is it about the same no matter what you start with? I ride a 600 and see it is often referred to as the meat grinder class on here which gives me the impression it's a pretty cut throat group to ride with, and am thinking at a club level it would be a little easier to break in at. Also is the TPM club racing a good group to run with since they seem to do a lot of tracks that would be close to me.

Thanks.

WERA is regional club racing. 600 class is where all the young wannabe's go to be the next Josh Hayes. They end up crashing alot and not learning about what makes for fast laps times. Buy a small displacement bike like a SV650 and have fun learning corner speed.

Who is TPM?

If you want to go racing do so. Doing what Glenn is calling racing isn't going to do anything for you.

Didn't know they did races. Join WERA and get a school to get your race license then enter.

If you have a 600 it doesn't mean that you have to race the 600 class, you can always bump up in class just not go down( you can't race against smaller bikes) chances are if you have been doing trackdays you have gotten comfortable on the track and probably will do better in a race than you expect. Just give it a shot and see what you think, just remember everyone out there had their "First" day racing so don't worry about it and just get out there

I learned how to ride a motorcycle and did my first track day 6 months later. (winter was in the middle.) I got my race license the next month. The rest of that season I did 4 track days. So when I entered my first race (in the meat grinder class) I had been riding a total of 1.5 years and had only done 6 track days.

IMHO, you shouldn't be afraid to go racing; after some of the bonheaded things i've seen at track days I'd much rather be peg-to-peg in a race. Its alot easier to trust racers than weekend warriors, I think. But thats just me. Someone else may disagree.

Its not that bad in the 600 class.. You will learn more in one solo then 10 trackdays.. People do some crazy things out there you just have to beable to change your line quick.

Trackdays are an excellent platform for the

transition to racing. When I made the transition I found that I had to break the habit of starting off slow..Their is no "time" in racing or racing practice to warm up.......

If you are solid on you Track rules such as lines, apex, late breaking, hard throttle and have some track-day experience...you should do alright your first time out in the AM class. How you progress is your ability to learn, as well as your
willing ess to push it a bit...

Many Track clubs offer track-riding schools from beginner to advanced and it wouldn't be a bad idea to take won taught by a pro or expert level rider...

Their is little courtesy in racing as shown in trackdays so be ready to get a lil close...

Otherwise stick to racing the laptimer and it may not be a bad idea to compare your time to some times of racers before your venture to one...

Good luck!!

+1. You can race in either of the B classes or A classes or even F1. In the novice ranks, these tend to be lighter grids. And to be honest, in the novice ranks, it's more about the rider than the bike. I have a buddy who takes his 2002 GSXR 600 into the F1 races because of the lighter grids. And he does fairly well to boot. So if you've done the trackdays and want to try racing, go for it. Take the bike you are familiar with (your 600 it sounds like), and enter the MW solo, and some B-class, A-class, or F1 sprints.

don't forget to sign up for C-superstock, just to get a feel for what TRAFFIC is like for 2 laps.
