Why does my dog poop on the deck?

He’s not a cat, for crissakes.

But he steals my socks and lacrosse balls from the neighbor’s yard. The lacrosse balls he doesn’t eat. My socks - those I find later in the yard...

It's a golden, not known for being brilliant.
Porch isn't being considered his home so it's fair game for a dump.

    Get a boxer.

What? Goldens are continually ranked as one of the top 5 smartest dog breeds. Your solution is to get a boxer? A breed that just cracks the top 50?!

Why are your socks and balls in the neighbor's yard?

I don't read what they rank. Just what I've seen.
Love all dogs, but the 3 friends of mine who have Goldens would not put agree with top anything of brillant. Loving, sure great dogs.
OH, they all wish there dogs behaved and listened as well as my boxer.

Won't even talk about the fur fun.

Back to topic, at your dog's age. Don't expect anything to change.

Enjoy the other aspects of your buddy. Haven't met a dog I don't like.

Where else would I keep them? The wife’s purse is full of all my revoked man cards.

My two Goldens have been great dogs, loving loyal and very trainable... but they’re just knuckleheads. Like... Troy can’t walk on hardwood floors - EVER. Emmitt knocks his head into walls and doors all day long. Both have been like this forever. But they don’t chew furniture or pillows, don’t shit in the house, and keep next to us and the kids on walks.

They’re book smart, but no common sense.

Hang on, we're lacking consistency here. Shouldn't you be finding these processed socks on your deck, your front walk or your patio?...

I’m no dog expert but I have watched several episodes of The Dog Whisperer and you need to discipline the dog and show him that his pooping in unwanted locations is “bad”.
Maybe you and the dog can watch a few episodes so that he can better understand what he’s doing wrong.
    Good luck

My mutt shits on the deck when there’s snow on it. I think she assumes it’s the same as the yard.

Yep. One of mine will go on the cement under the deck when the yard is wet, he is fine in the rain but doesn't like stepping on wet grass

It’s not a 100% all the time dropping beef on the wood but it’s like a 70:30::wood:grass kinda dealio.

And that may make some sense. In Syracuse we get a little bit of snow and we usually let them out the back door when they need to let it out the back door.

But Emmitt always unloads in the green...

Maybe he has to go really bad, and the deck is the first acceptable place he gets to.

He could have some form of bowel problem - gas, gas-driven turds, etc.
