I liked this part: It’s clear that the traditional ways of preventing disease — patients seeing a doctor regularly to get screened and treated — have not been working, said Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, L.A. County’s interim health officer.

In what world is screening and treatment defined as prevention?

Failure to pay attention to information about transmission of STDs that has been around for decades is stupidity, not racism.

One does not need screening or treatment to prevent venereal diseases or HIV.
One needs to not engage in the behavior that spreads those things.
Don't do IV drugs and don't stick your weenie in people you don't know.
That probably eliminates 99.99% of the risk for the average person.

If you want to get an HIV test, donate blood. They'll let you know.

Screening is prevention. Treatment is when prevention fails.

So poor, under educated, misinformed whites who make bad life decisions make them because of their environment. But blacks who are also poor, under educated and misinformed who also make the same bad life decisions, do it because they are black?

Screening is identification not prevention. Prevention would be stopping it from happening before you get screened...

True...but I can see regular screening as part of an effort to prevent the spread of something.

From the CDC type perspective yep. I was thinking more individually.

Wouldn’t the dentist be a good example of screening also being prevention?

Sidebar: don’t get your wisdom teeth pulled at 48. Recovery is much slower. I’m miserable.

Brushing your teeth and flossing is prevention. Going to the dentist is to make sure you're doing it right.
