I think it’s an inevitable cycle. Societies start in deprivation and some eventually achieve greatness and material comfort. The kids gradually lose the dynanism their parents and grandparents possessed as they leave material deprivation farther and farther behind. Eventually it descends into hedonism and idiocy because there isn’t any selection pressure weeding out the weak. The society then implodes or is destroyed by external enemies as it’s no longer strong enough to stay cohesive. Every great nation defeated by foreigners first defeated itself.
