    Steeltoe What's my move?

Everything about that transmission in the Africa Twin sounds amazing. Watched some review vids on that thing and I can't wrap my head around how it works on trails up and down. The thing is amazing!

Yea the thing is a marvel to ride. It literally works off road. I didnt buy it for much extreme off road but I did do some rather slick and rough stuff down south near Natchez MS a week ago.

It takes some time to wrap your head around what all the buttons and functions do but once you grip that part it all begins to make sense. It’s been rock solid for 4K miles so far except a water pump that weeps a little coolant every now and then. Service manual says that’s normal.

Does it come with stickers to tell it from a regular R1. For, you know, Bike Night?

I want one but can't get over the build quality.

Go look at a AT vs. a Super Tenere.

The Honda looks like it was made in China.

Sadly I agree having owned both. The big Yamaha needs a diet though.

I’m personally holding on to the Honda until Yamaha releases the T7 then I’ll be back on a Yamaha.

To what issue(s) are you referring?
Are you saying the FZR trans were dodgy or the ones since the FZR?
If FZR, are you talkin' all FZRs or 400s, 600s, 750s (YZF - same engine case/swappable trans), 1000s?
If after FZR, all Yamahas...and since? First I ever heard of it.

Never had a transmission issue with my '95 FZR1000. In fact, upon tearing it down with 13K miles on it to replace the clutch basket (went deeper to insure errant clutch finger pieces didn't cause collateral damage), the trans was found to be in phenomenally good shape...attributed to my not shifting like a squid, YMMV. While torn down, I had it sped up...150+hp. Trans is still functioning flawlessly.

The clutch basket on the 1000, same one on the V-Max, is a weak point but it has nothing to do with the transmission.
Of the handful of people I know that have/had V-Max, FZR1000, Thunderace (YZF with FZR1000 engine), etc., not a one of 'em had trans issues. They all replaced the clutch basket with a Falicon, whether before or after the OEM basket failed. These are guys that regularly ran their bikes to the stops almost weekly during riding seasons and every one of 'em were putting more to the ground than what the bikes came with. Quite a few other brands gettin' towed/pushed home (broken cranks, twisted cams, ventilated cases), but no Yamahas...ever.

There is only like 25lbs. between them though?

I heard Tenere hid it's weight well but haven't ridden either.

How much will it cost when part #92(a) in the above diagram fails? Asking for a friend.

It’s more weight than 25 lbs, big Tenere is 575 and my heavier DCT Africa Twin is 534. Both bikes hide their weight well until that 30 degree list happens and both are going down then. The manual Africa Twin is 22 lbs lighter than my DCT version. The Triumph Tiger 800XC was the better bike of the 3 I had. It was 50 lbs lighter than a manual Africa Twin. Made better power and the riding position suited me best of the three. Unfortunately my brief Triumph experience was tainted by a pos dealer. Nothing was wrong with the bike but due to the crappy ass dealer I sold it to a close friend who loves it.

The weepy water pump on the Honda has tainted the Honda experience a bit but it appears to be normal the several I’ve run across. Locally they are very popular. I have 3 friends with Africa Twins. They all except one have the weepy water pump.

Imo Yamaha build quality and fit and finish today is better than Honda. The Africa Twin platform is good though.

dave3593 What I know about opera I learned from Bugs Bunny

A long time ago I had a 1984 Husqvarna 500AE. In enduro competition I was very surprised that I road this bike consistently faster than other current (at the time) enduro bikes. It was faster for me in slippery mud and much better on difficult hills.
They were fragile and high maintenance and would overheat if you didn't go fast enough. They were three speed with each ratio having it's own centrifugal clutch. You could hear them shift but you never had to let off. Being as they were 500s you could still make the from end light anywhere in the powerband. Husky quit making them probably because of reliability.

I agree. I raced a 1989 FZR 600 and that engine/transmission was bulletproof. Only thing I destroyed was the clutch basket as when I learned to do wheelies that front end was hardly on the ground. Went through fork seals like crazy. People in my little town hated me. That was a great bike for its time.

  19. For those of you whining about this technology - don't worry. When electric bikes replace IC bikes, there will be no need for such mechanical abominations.
