Hey T, don't ever underestimate how a parent is going to react when you attempt to correct them or their kid. As a high school coach for the last five years I've seen it all (you know the school; St. X). About 3 years ago we took a trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Those of you that have been there know that there is a walking path right next to the rim that if you walk one wrong step you are going down...way down. So I'm watching this single mom pushing two carraiges and her 3 year old is about 10 feet behind her, completely oblivious to the fact that a wrong step will cause certain death. I go to the mom and say, "lady, you know that your kid has no idea that if it walks the wrong place it is going over the edge". She proceeds to scream at me to mind my own business and stay the hell out of her life blah, blah, blah. Great line from the movie "Parenthood": "You have to have a license to get a dog but any asshole can become a parent".
Glad to hear that. I must say, after he realized he'd made a bad move, and I was helping him get the thing out of the ditch, he was respectful, and had his head hung low. They were freaking at first. Trying to get the scooter going while ditched....a natural "Flee" instinct I believe. After I got up there and got things semi-straightened up.....The women-folk were out of the car and raising cane verbally (not cursing naturally, but letting him know how they felt, unmistakably)....I remember he gave me a look like "Just dont let them get me!!!" He apologized without hesitation. Hope he learned a lesson....cuz it looked like it hurt!

Now thats just funny and disheartening on soooo manny levels!....wow!:wow: ....that other thread was a real hoot.
Yep, and 1 or 2 are biggun's! I'm not sure about this, I haven't seen any gators "doing it"..... yet!
My point in posting a photo of my kids with respect to the gators is as follows: A lot of times, whether a kid is being "supervised" or is doing something "unsafe" is largely a matter of perception of the person viewing the kids. My kids are no strangers to Jennings. Those two aren't six either, they're nine. They practically grew up on the weekends at Jennings. They are well versed in what is expected of them there by both me and track management. To a large degree they comply as well. Insofar as alligators go, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were watching the gators. I'm not sure how you tease one though (these things are stupid and have no emotion.) The kids have spent countless hours near gators and know what to do and what not to do around them. They're also familiar with the tell-tale signs that you should get the hell away. Standing on an exposed bank (such as the pond discussed) with a gator in the water poses very little threat. Just because it looks dangerous to some, doens't mean it is. Remember, some people think putting a kid on a motorcycle is dangerous and bad parenting.
I hate to come late on a discussion that's important to me, but here goes- You guys should really police up these actions when you see them. I understand the rant after the fact, but a lot of these kids need to hear from a responsible adult when they are committing these actions. Keep in mind a lot of the parents probably don't know the stuff their kids are doing out of eye & ear shot. A "Hey, slow down" or "Don't do that" can carry a lot of weight from a reasonable adult. You don't need to insult the kids, but you SHOULD let them know when their actions are dangerous. The parents *most* of the time will thank you for looking out. I will police up ANYBODY's kid if I think they are in for some trouble. I have no problem explaining to the parents either. I'm a total believer in the village raising the child. Keep in mind the parents probably don't even know what's going on, but would like to know. I know I would. I will escort a child to their parents or to an official and not think twice about it. Uncle Buck loves the kids. I will make it a point to look out for them.
+1 Buck, you have my permision and encouragement to throw shit at my kid whether he's doing something stupid or not. Of course he's 19 now so he's not really a kid anymore.
It kinda goes with the concept of a "WERA family". Someone would expect me to do something if I saw a thief stealing their stuff, or a storm comes up and their awning is about to blow away, or their bike caught on fire while they are gone taking a leak, but then they are gonna let Conrad get eaten by the gators because he slipped away while I was getting a wrench out of the trailer? Conrad slipped away last year at the GNF. I was working the endurance race, he and mom were taking a nap. He woke up, somehow got the door open without waking mom (up to then he had not been able to open the door) and went for a stroll. Chris Spencer came and found me in the hot pits and let me know he was running amuck, and that they had him corralled in their pit. Thanks for being a bud, Chris. Owe you one.
