Preparing for lengthy hospital stay....what do I buy/bring/need?

Discussion in 'General' started by SpeedyE, Jul 21, 2020.

SpeedyE Experimental prototype, never meant for production

I always say WAY too much, so I am going to try and keep myself in check, and not say too much.
Been going through a roller-coaster of changing diagnoses/scenarios/outcomes/etc for about 5-6 weeks.
Just got done w/ outpatient surgery to see if they can even do real surgery, i will find out that answer next week (or sooner/later).
Was told by one dr/specialist (not the surgeon), if they can do surgery, I will be in hospital recovering for 3-4 weeks, before beginning the real suck. I seen my dad go through this, and he was unable to talk, for weeks/? after lesser/sooner-surgery. They gave him a small white-board to write on. He had feeding/stomach tubes and stuff, so no candy/etc for me.
I wont have visitors/calls cause I wont be able to talk, and people have their own lives to deal with.
My mom is elderly and stressed, her stress will cause me stress, as was reverberated(!!!!!) at hospital today, so no momma. My other immediate family is all gone.
    I will be Boredom/Lonely.

What/if I go to hospital for surgery, what I need to bring? To stay un-bored?
I have only been in hospital for broken bones, impacts/etc....never surgery/lengthy/serious.....this is all new to me.
My phone has Zero apps/FB/etc, will only use it for texts. I do not own a lap-top.

    Do I buy a low-cost laptop, and load it w/ FB/Beeb/amazon-prime-videos/etc???
Does a laptop work in a hospital? Wi-Fi????
I am not a big book reader.
Any ideas/recommendations to bring w/ me....just trying to get ducks in row, this week, if I go for surgery.
    TY

*Do they allow your dog to visit at hospital???

Maybe reserve some nurses in short skirts. It always goes well for the patient's in the movies...:D

Good luck with everything SpeedyE, and let the Docs know raccoons and ducks will be by daily for visiting hours!!

Yes but why do it yourself when the nurses will do it for you. Well at least that’s been my experiences after waking up in a few hospitals. :D

+1 to infinity on a cheap tablet that can stream and read books. Check to see if you can check out and download books and magazines from your library. Make sure that your cheap tablet can stream over wifi and you can watch hours of youtube races. HOURS. I am sure that folks here will send you many many youtube channel recommendations.

Get a tablet and I (or anyone else here as well) will help you set up for your local library and other streaming apps.

I was going to Kindle but if you are not a big reader....
    Drawing app?
Games including mindless ones like solitaire (many forms), suduko, etc.
As stated expect dodgy wifi so don't get your hopes up on video.
Maybe DVDs on the hospital TV?
Don't totally reject visitors seeing people can be good for you even if they are just giving a one sided review of the races from the weekend.
Likely a big no on the dog which would suck for me as the Shelties need petting (even the Orange Horror Spitfire)

    Good luck and heal fast.

Be sure to wash your hair the night before surgery, it might be a while before you get to do it again. As others have said, a cheap laptop or iPad, charger, possibly an extension cord, though that will have to be approved by the hospital, slippers (Must-have), toiletries, magazines or books, your cell phone and charger. And as papa said, posting your hospital and address and relevant admission dates might yield a card or two from the BBS, you never know. Or photos of Dave's junk. Again, you just never know. Reach out if you need anything. Oh and once you're in a room, post that too. You just never know about this crowd.

Headphones for privacy- yours and theirs. Make lists of the shows/movies/books you would like to watch or listen to on Netflix/Prime, etc.

Not me but he might have while you were sedated LOL. Just kidding when Mom was in the hospital the best nurse was a dude that obviously liked guys. But you know what he did an excellent job and that was what mattered.

Though your biggest concern should be whether the photo on the jar is you clothed or .....
