I use RC9s and Astars boots. I tried Specialized, but they run narrow. I have a wide toe box, making the Shimano a great show for me.
Goal is 220. Currently 250. I just need to ride more, and eat better. I know what I need to do, but have not been doing it, or if I do, not consistently enough. It's all up to me and how I choose to focus myself.
Fwiw, weighing food and tracking calories religiously was immensely helpful to me. I use fatsecret.com, but there are a bunch of tracker apps. It's truly eye opening how much you eat when you're just winging it. The late night snacking usually kills me.
Started may 24th 215 pounds, got back on the road/gravel bike, ditched the sugar, soda, went low carb, intermittent fasting (24-36 hours), started lifting at home again, been on the dirt bike once a week, when possible. was 188 yesterday. 3 more pounds, and i will be down 30 lbs. hoping i can get to 180 but, 185 is a win for me at 6 feet tall, and former lifter, recreational body builder. (read: high body mass index). weight charts say my "ideal weight" would be near 160... I would be a scarecrow. good luck on your weight lost quest. you can do it! you guys need to stop posting all the bike porn, making me want to drop some big coin and grab an update, with wider 42-48mm "gravelish" tire/wheelset. Thank you. I liked the subdue look and kept tight to the color scheme. The orange give it a kick. Once I get rolling, I look like Christmas tree. I typically ride with three lights on the rear (left seat stay, seat, helmet). I have to think that has been a key to surviving SoFL traffic. But now, I don't think I will survive PA (North of Pitt).
I’ve got the same light on my seat stay. Only complaint is that it does not have a low battery indicator, but most do not.
I picked up a Garmin RTL510 radar tail light, it's probably my favorite addition to the bike this year. It seems totally frivolous on paper, but everyone who has one is always like how did I live without it before? It'll pair Garmin or Wahoo bike computers and show you on screen the number of approaching cars and their relative distance, and give you a different alert if their closing speed is excessive, and give you an all clear signal. Overall it lets me be a little more vigilant and let's me know when I should stop dodging potholes, I usually scoot over a little more for the speeders too. Looks something like this:
Just signed up on fatsecret.com (weird website name, haha). I'm not fat (yet), but dad bod is creeping up on me. I've got a toddler that's taking up most discretionary time, and alcohol intake has gone way up during quarantine. I'm picking up my new bike this week and will hopefully get out more than I am now (only 1 or 2 rides a week). By the way: eff those weight charts. I was in crazy-good shape 2 years ago (right before the kid!), and the chart had me 20+ lbs over target.
Agree on the lack on indicator. I also think that the light it is starting to hold less charge these days. I have had that light since 2013/14.
Are gravel bikes allowed in this thread? Had to wait awhile on Paul's build list but got this built up a few months ago. All Easton carbon cranks, wheels, post + GRX 810 + WTB rubber and saddle. Rides great and the Byway 44's work great for the 70/30 asphalt/gravel rides I do around my house in Asheville.
I feel your pain. I went from 185 in my competitive cycling years to currently being 250. I was a 100-150 mile per week rider. But now, with the extra weight, and still riding a 53/39 with a 11-25 rear cassette, hills suck, I get pain in my hands, feet and butt from the extra weight..... I even changed from Speedplay pedals and Sidis to running Cat shoes and Ultegra pedals to try and get rid of the foot pain. But, no change. The discomfort is such that ironically, I need to ride to lose weight, but riding gives me such discomfort and displeasure now that I have to limit my rides to 60-75 mins, down from 90 mins to 5 hours that I used to do in my prime.
Try the look pedals/cleats. MUCH wider distribution of bodyweight across the pedal system than SPD/Speedplay/Ultegra. My best race weight was 167. I raced as a cat2 at 175-180 22 years of cube life and bad habits put me where I am today.
I thought of eventually going that way, I just had Speedplay (4 bolt) specific Sidis and my replacement Cat shoes were already set up for the two bolt SPD cleat that I had for using Indoor cycles at my training facility, so I thought I would go the easy way before shelling out more $$ for both new shoes and pedals that may not work anyway. But its definitely an option I should investigate.
On thing that really caused pain for me was too narrow pedal location, I needed the pedals farther apart. Shimano makes the Ultegra with a long spindle (other brands do too). It helped a lot for me.
Hit craigslist for Sidis. I picked up a pair of the sidi wire vent carbon for $120. The Look cleats should be less than $20. Or look for a low budget entry shoe, just to test the theory.
