    1958 for Alaska and Hawaii. Believe it or not, there was serious discussion on whether this was a good idea.

    Seward's folly, but that was when Alaska was bought from the Czar back around the time of Lincoln.

    Looks like Territory wins out for what AK and HI were before they got statehood.

    There were some submarine attacks on the east coast. IIRC, ferris wheel lights were a favorite target. There were also submarine attacks in California, an oilfield. In New York and Florida, some germans were dropped off as saboteurs. The germans also setup a weather station in Canada to help the submarines, they even dropped American cig butts to disguise it, just recently discovered.
