^dude says for the $. And that block was used across Chevy, Olds, Buick and Caddy for 50 years. They are known as bullet prof. Had 4 or 5 in my day from an 88 olds cutlass with the 2.8 to a 2008 3.6 equinox sport. Only recent motors (4.6 vortec, 3.6/8 VVT) had issues, and all top end. Only motors that didnt make it to 200K miles Ive owned.

 

Exceeded track limits a few times.

Should've had a ride through penalty.

We used a lot of SS in the nuke industry...304,304L,316 and 316L. One of the problems was it's susceptability to chloride stress corossion cracking. Chlorides (or flourides) would attack the chromium/carbide in the grain boundary causing micro cracks that would then propagate into real cracks under stress...Hence IGSCC, intergranular stress corrosion cracking. The L grades were low carbon and hence less susceptible.
