New (sort of) Official Magazine

As of last week WERA has worked out a deal with American Road & Racing (new name of American Roadracing) to be the official publication of WERA and it will be sent to all members as a part of your membership.

The sort of new portion comes into play since American Roadracing was started by Patty Frank (one of the founders of WERA) as WERA's newsletter in the mid 70's. Ain't nice when things come full circle [IMG]

All current members should be receiving their first issue withing the next month or so.

Some but I wouldn't ge my hopes up too much. The problem is their cost to send a reporter, it's not worth it to them for regional stuff. Now if there is anyone out there willing to submit articles they will probably print it with no problem. Most regional coverage either comes from independant reporters or from the sanctioning bodies themselves. I've even written one regional race report but really don't have the time or talent to do it every weekend.

This is good news! Last years "official" mag just didn't hold my interest (drag bikes just not my idea of fun on 2 wheels....)

Hey as long as I actually get this magazine this year I'll be happy. I only received 3 out of ~12 issues of that Motorcycle Performance magazine. When I did get one it was usually a month after it came out. Can't wait to see this new 'rag, as long as I get it in the mail it's better than the old one.

Sean, I sent American Road and Racing an e-mail asking Peter if he wanted me to send coverage of the Talledega regional opener and he said, "Unfortuantely, they would not be able to run regional info because of the extent of their National and World coverage." I thought I would tell you before everybody got their hopes up.

Unfortunately this will be the case with most major magazines. They want big names, big ads and big stories. They generally don't care to publish the "play by play" of club racing but rather opt to publish results only.

Sean, is there any chance of WERA publishing a club newsletter with stories, pictures and other stuff about the race weekend? Maybe you could pinch those pennies a little harder and use membership/entry fees to cover some of the expense. Just curious. [IMG]

The expense of just prinitng a newsletter is not that big of an issue, the problem is the exact same one that caused American Roadracing to be sold to John Ulrich all those years ago - time. We can't make enough off of a newsletter type paper to justify the extra person it would require hiring (especially what it would cost to hire the right person). The ~3000 members just doesn't draw the advertisers.

I figured that was the case. Money, money, money.

Some day when I'm filthy stinking rich, I'll donate a ton of money to WERA so we can have a first class magazine to promote our sport and people. But don't start holding your breath just yet, let me get my head above water first. [IMG]

I haven't even raced yet this year and I'm already in debt from acquiring supplies for the season. Tell me how that happened again?

Tell me about it. The amount of tracks requiring a deposit and the amount of money they all want has us damn near totally broke at the beginning of every season.

I wanna who is getting rich in this sport? It sure ain't the sanctioning bodies or the racers... Then again, it could be worse. We could all just sit in front of the TV or mow the lawn on weekends [IMG]

I don't know who's making all the money either. If you ever find out, let me know as I'm sure it's my long lost Uncle or something like that. [IMG]

But you're right, I'm just thankful I have a place to go play on weekends instead of watching someone else do it on TV and wish I was there. Or even worse...mowing the lawn! [IMG]

Just in case you missed it, that was my indirect way of saying thanks to you and WERA for providing a playground for us. I didn't want to get all mushy and stuff in front of the guys. [IMG]

    Awwwwww, thanks!

I wasn't saying anything either, just a general bitch about the cost of racing for all involved. I usually feel better for a while when I get stuff off my chest [IMG]

What about a few riders doubling as sports writers at the races and then posting it on the web? You get the race coverage without the expense of printing and postage. I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem getting a long time rider/member to write a paragraph about each race. Maybe even a picture or two. If it's a possiblity, ask for volunteers.

(Wow, my password still works. I thought for sure Sean had banned me from the BBS.)

Nope didn't ban anyone, I don't bother with the small stuff. If I get in a nuking mood I get the entire BBS including me [IMG]

I like the idea of doing stuff on the web site. I'll put it up if people want to write it. Only thing is that getting stories up will have to wait on me getting to town and I retain all rights to edit as I see fit... What can I say, it's a power trip thing [IMG] Seriously though, I think it's a great idea.
